Decanted for 3 hours (not nearly enough), and by the first whiff I knew I was in for a treat. Bright (like flourescent) purple color, and totally opaque. Crushed raspberries and tar notes are abundant. Bright acidity and strong, but well-proportioned tannins lend complexity and balance. A killer wine...I just hope I can restrain myself for a while (10+ years I would think) before drinking my other bottle. 96 pts

Reminds me of a great syrah from John Alban.

Slaughtdog I have a couple of 99's and several 2002's, but I have never tasted a Turley Hayne Petite Syrah! Parker notes suggest a minimum of 10+ years for aging, and some have a 50+ year life! I probably won't open any till 2012 or later. However, if I did open a 2002, how long would you suggest in the decanter?

Latour67, obviously no substitute for aging, but if I had it to do over, I think I would have decanted the wine for 6 hours prior to first glass. I don't think any reasonable amount of decanting would damage this wine.

As an aside, I read somewhere (someone's opinion) that the style of this wine changed, with the '95 vintage, to be more accessible young. I felt that this wine was a pleasure to drink, if a little one-dimensional.

2001 Turley Petite Sirah Hayne Vineyard - USA, California, Napa Valley, St. Helena (10/17/2009)
WIML89-90?

Tasted October 17, 2009 at an offline.

Dark garnet to purple color in the glass, clear hue throughout. Nose of roasted meat, cassis and some notes of leather. Comes across as a little hot on the nose. Flavors of berries, cassis and cherries. Light to medium acidity, medium to firm tannins, medium to full bodied. Drink now with some air time or continue to hold and hope. (89 pts.)
