2001 Fattoria di Felsina Berardenga Fontalloro Toscana IGT - Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT (8/16/2007)

Otis opened this at his CDP. This is a 100% Sangiovese Supertuscan. I liked this wine each time I have tried it. This is the 4th vintage I have tried. This is an elegant wine with a typical sangio profile. Notes of cherry, violets and roses. Despite being a very good to outstanding wine. I liked the 1986 (93 points), 1999 (93 points) and 2000 vintages (92 points) better. I gave this wine 90 points.

Decanted (not my doing) for approx. 30 minutes before serving. Dark ruby color with no bricking. The cherries and violets are still very much present but some mushroom notes are coming forward now. No distinguishable tannins present on the palate and the fruit is still there. The only thing lacking with this wine is the acidity. I think the wine is at its apex now and without the acidity and the tannin backbone will begin a decline shortly. If you have them, drink them. A very enjoyable wine but nothing spectacular. 89 points.
