Reading the '97 Gallo Stefani thread prompted a search and destroy mission in the kybo cellars. From the other thread -

'95 Stefani CS: Opened for 1 hr. prior to serving, not decanted.

Deep purple coloration, tons of slow moving legs. Not a great deal of sediment. Displayed the same cherry and cigar box notes, along with the wet earth undertones. Lots of currant and dark red fruits on the palate; the first glass still showed quite a bit of tannin that subsided within 1/2 hr. Super smooth, plush Cab w/a long, intense finish of black fruit, cedar, and spice. Not dead by a long shot.

I'd currently rate this wine 91-92 pts. and holding its own quite well. For $24, it was a steal 3 yrs. ago; I regret not having any more.

Tonight: '96 Frei Ranch CS
Opened for 1/2 hr. prior to tasting - not decanted.

Deep magenta w/a tad of garnet, quite clear though throwing a bit of sediment. Long, slow thin legs. Deep aromatics of currant and earth, slight cherry and cedar as well. Fresh crushed red and black fruit on the palate, though more centered than with the Stefani. Tannins are nicely integrated and follow the fruit through the finish. Sweet cedar and red fruit linger effortlessly on the finish.

The wine is prime, more integrated than the '95 Stefani, and drinking very well. Laube says to drink through '08 and I think that is a reasonable timeframe. 89 pts., $23, solid "A" QPR. Hey, Gallo's got the forumla right on these wines.
