I had this wine Friday night with bigred_seeker and preferred.
Made from 100% Merlot. Deep purple in color with smoked meat, earthy, black fruit and cassis on the nose. On the palate it is rich and smoky with nice integrated acidity. A blackberry finish with a hint of chocolate.
I have liked this wine in the past, and still do.
I must admit that I would LOVE this wine if it was not priced at $55.00...

I was wondering if you have tried any other vintages, 1997 or 1998

bdamico,

I have had the '97 & '98. Both very good Italian Merlot. I recall the '97 having a hint of mint that I have not picked out on other vintages.
These are wines that Parker loves much more than the WS. So, if your palate leans more toward one than the other you might keep that in mind.
Like I said, I like these wines, just think they are pushing the price too much.
I finished off the '99 last night and it was showing very very well. I feel these wines need air.

The nose on this wine was almost barnyard in nature - strong earthy smell. I'm not a fan of the merlot varietal but this baby had some strength.

I would give this wine a 7 .... get my point THE 291? Big Grin Wink

Merlot, from Lazio.

Dark ruby/black colour. Aromas of earth, spice, cherry, and leather. Medium-full bodied with spice, currant, plums, and earth. Moderate-long finish, 30-35s, with smoke, plums, and earth. 91 points (08/26/2005).

I thought this showed very well. Deep, dark, and brooding. Especially impressive for 100% Merlot. 92 pts for me.

Havent had the 1999 but finished my last (of three) bottle of the 2000. Didnt keep any "official" notes but agree (from memory) with futronic.

A bit confused about the price point that was mention by THE 291 - $55!? I paid $34 for my bottles!! I wouldnt pay any more than that!! Eek
