I really dig this! Admittedly not a big Zin fan, I found an appropriate mix of dark rasberry jam, alcohol, and crushed black pepper. I prefer this style over a Ridge Geyserville. 90

I really like this, too. I have 4 bottles left in the cellar that I got at Wine Library for just $12/ea. Terrific QPR at that price.

bottmfishr,
Are you sure it was the Old Vines and not the Sonoma County?? Wine Library's website is still showing the 99 Seghesio Old Vine Zin for $21, and the 00 Sonoma for $12.
I've had the Sonoma, and it's good stuff! smile

I can't afford it, but I buy it anyway.

$12 a bottle? I need to move! I can't get this for less than $21.

Still, even at $21, this wine is a consistent winner. I haven't seen the 2000s here, yet. Glad to see it is showing its pedigree in a less than perfect vintage.

I'm sorry -- you're right. I was referring to the Sonoma bottling that's $12/btl. at WL. Still, a great Zin for a little money...
Actually, for the money, I think the Sonoma is a much better deal than the Old Vine, which is also quite good, but as you noted sells for almost twice the price.

bottmfishr,
I agree. I'd rather have 2 of the Sonoma, than just one of the Old Vines.
I've never met a Seghesio zin I didn't like! big grin

I can't afford it, but I buy it anyway.

R2D2, if you liked the '00 Old Vine, chances are you'll really enjoy the '00 Cortina as well. Had it side by side with the Old Vine last week.

"Zin Night" at a friends house last night. He cooked up some tasty Asian-spiced baby back ribs. Nice match.

He served four wines blind and asked everyone to rank them. The 2000 Seghesio Old Vine finished a strong second (just behind a '97 Rabbit Ridge Olson Vyd, and well ahead of the 2000 Rafanelli and 2001 Martinelli G&L).

I was quite impressed with the wine's smoothness and balance. An excellent value at $21. Agree with R2D2's 90P rating.

Cheers,

Otis

Both the 00 Old Vines and Cortina are worth the money. These are Zins in the classic sense -- from the good old days before they spike Zin with a lot of Carignane and Petite Syrah. Don't get me wrong -- I love some of the field blends. But Seghesio makes some great old style Zin. I had the good fortune to run into Pete Seghesio last time I was at the winery and he had some amazing stories of the old days in Sonoma county.

I always wanted to be a procrastinator.

As you all know, I'm a big fan of Seghesio's wines. Even in off Zin vintages, I think that Seghesio makes a good product across all of their lines. I am always impressed that pricing staying consistent year in and year out. The 01s that I have had so far are excellent, especially the Home Ranch.

Popped another bottle of this wine open this evening and still love this wine. Tasting notes are as follows:

I really like this wine. The wine is still ruby-red with a slight purple hue, clear, but good color intensity. Aromas of blackberry and anise lead the way, with a little spice or oak to follow. Lots of acidity still exists, showing plenty of life in this wine. Well balanced, with black cherry flavors.
