Here are the notes from a tasting I attended back in February. The tasting was focused around the 86 Right Bank wines as I would find out, and here are my accounts of events:
Flight 1 - not blind, opened at the table and poured immediately NV Krug Grande Cuvée Champagne, Champagne, France Medium straw yellow. (It was not possible ascertain the vintages that have been blended into this wine). Scents of gummy bears, licorice, anise, and fennel. Medium bodied with excellent density and structure. Quite powerful and "direct" with flavors of popcicle, citrus, lime, apple cider, and minerals. Very elegant and harmonious in spite of a fairly brute-ish power-profile. Fresh and lively with a smooth aftertaste of apples. 91 points NV Krug Rosé Champagne, Champagne, France Dark appearance - almost like apple juice. Scents of rotten apples, and strawberry. Medium bodied with a delicious fat texture - almost like a Meursault. In the mouth the wine was sweet and gentle with a seductive, lush flavor profile, coupled with good weight and intensity. Ripe, and mature, the wine packed an impressive core of fruit and seemed resolved and ready for consumption. Long, and balanced on the aftertaste. Very, very nice. 92 points Flight 2 1986 Pavie, St. Emilion, Bordeaux, France Corked. Moving right along... 1986 Larrossée, St. Emilion, Bordeaux, France Clear red color with a light, broad rim. Scents of sweet liqueur, and vanilla. Medium bodied with ample structure, and a sweet initial attack on the palate. Well ordered with nice, round fruit, albeit a touch bitter on the aftertaste. Classic and forward in nature with so-so complexity, yet plenty of upfront appeal. The bitter aftertaste seemed to vanish somewhat over the course of about 45 minutes, and in summary the wine was quite delicious. 89 points 1986 Clinet, Pomerol, Bordeaux, France Classic red with clear browning at the rim. Scents of violets, blueberry, and tomato. Light to medium bodied with good elegance and style, resolved tannins, and decent structure. Chunky and chewy in texture with plum-like flavors and a faint bitterness on the aftertaste. Very "Right Bank" in taste. Essentially, the wine lacked a bit of with for a really high score, but all things considered it was a very nice encounter. 89 points 1986 L'Angelus, St. Emilion, Bordeaux, France Dark red color with a faint rim. Gorgeous scents of créme brulée, vanilla, and dairy products. Sweet and chocolaty in the mouth with a fat, oily texture wrapped around plush, dense fruit. Medium bodied with excellent definition and an orange chocolate truffle flavor profile, and a sweet, long, balanced aftertaste that echo'ed out on notes of cocoa and capucino. Delicious. 93 points Flight 3 1986 La Conseillante, Pomerol, Bordeaux, France Deep red color with light rim. Scents of dark berries. Delightfully sweet on the mid-palate with excellent intensity and power, coupled with a great sense of feminine grace. Beautifully structured and quite forward with a silky soft core of fruit, a lush and light feel, yet lots of dimensions and complexity. Nice width and sweetness, channeled through wide gates with a long, pleasing finish. 92 points 1986 Figeac, St. Emilion, Bordeaux, France Clear, dark red color with browning at the rim. Scents of mustard and "old" tobacco. On the palate the wine was quite classic in nature. Tobacco-fused flavors with subtle raisiny notes, clear and concise definition, and a good, dense core of fruit. This wine is at a good level of maturity and is very well made, albeit more "correct" that "breath-taking". Nice, balanced aftertaste. Ready for business. 89 points 1986 Cheval Blanc, St. Emilion, Bordeaux, France Dark red color. Slightly brown rim. Initially there was a foul odor of rotten eggs coming out of the glass. This blew off with swirling of the glass. After that the bouquet revealed notes of autumn leaves. Medium bodied with a delicious, ripe core of fruit and flavors of rich, dark chocolate. Well structured and defined with a classic and stylish profile and identity. Wonderfully sweet, with a seductive, long, sexy aftertaste. Very nice. 92 points 1986 Lafleur, Pomerol, Bordeaux, France Clear red with browning at the rim. Scents of tobacco coming out of the glass. Good mid-palate impression with intensity and structure. Flavor-wise this wine is un-remarkable. Very dry and rustic on the aftertaste with an impression of dust and chalk. As for the power and concentration, this wine is a nice example, but I think the best term I can find for this wine is "un-remarkable". Still, it is no slouch. Just not what I am used to from Lafleur. 86 points Flight 4 1986 Le Bon Pastuer, Pomerol, Bordeaux, France Dark red with clear, visible lightening at the rim. Scents of eggs and cheese coming out of the glass. A shaky bouquet to say the least. After some minutes, this most undesirable characteristic vanished, and notes of forest floor, soil, and coffee emerged. Medium bodied with excellent structure and definition. Generous amounts of ripe, dense fruit, with flavors of blueberry, and flowers. Wonderfully fat and in texture with oily glycerin, interesting complexity, and a long, smooth, balanced finish. 93 points 1986 Gombaude Gillot Cuvée Speciale, Pomerol, Bordeaux, France Deep, dark red color. Very minerally on the nose with scents of vitamin pills, and iron. Medium bodied with a faint bitterness of taste that disappeared after 20 minutes. Dense, and concentrated with beautiful complexity, integration, and balance. Quite evolve and mature for present day consumption. The aftertaste echo'ed out harmoniously on notes of tobacco. Very, very good. 92 points 1986 Canon, St. Emilion, Bordeaux, France Crimson, dark red with a brown rim. Scents of dust and vinegar. To begin with, my belief was that this wine was slightly flawed. However, having shaken off the dizziness after being poured from the decanter, the vinegar notes disappeared and a lovely bouquet on notes of plum/raisin emerged. Medium bodied with a superb sense of identity and style, fused with ample power and structure, and delicious flavors of brown sugar, and plums. There were also marzipan notes to be identified, and the aftertaste was balanced and rich. 92 points 1986 Le Tertre Rôteboeuf, St. Emilion, Bordeaux, France Dark red color impression. Scents of chalk, stones, and other minerals. Brilliantly fat and flowy in texture. Sweet to the core with flavors of chocolate, and capucino, coupled with sugar cane, prunes, and vanilla. Delightfully elegant with tons of personality, and a very sexy delivery. Imagine that. Sexy with a personality. Excellent complexity with a myriad of dimensions and lots of intriguing facets. Oh, did I mention sexy? 94 points Flight 5 1986 Vieux Chateau Certan, Pomerol, Bordeaux, France Deep, dark red with lots of sediment. Scents of cranberry and gauze. In the mouth the wine was somewhat rejective in nature with clear signs of alcohol heat. Maybe this wine is just at a very closed and awkward stage of evolution. There's probably no questioning the quality of the underlying material, as there seemed to be lots of stuffing and potential tucked away. However, presently the wine should be left alone. 88 points 1986 L'Evangile, Pomerol, Bordeaux, France Dark red with a brown hue across the surface of the wine. Scents of chalk, dust, and fresh air. In the mouth the wine had an interesting flavor profile on maritime notes, intermixed with a "canned tomato" quality. I found myself really liking this slightly odd flavor impression - sort of like a new undefinable thing that sneaks up on you. Medium bodied with good structure (a somewhat raspy texture), and a good, harmonious aftertaste. A very, very interesting wine, albeit not a huge L'Evangile. 89 points 1986 Certan de May, Pomerol, Bordeaux, France Medium to dark red color with visible 1/4 inch browning at the rim. Scents of ink, crustacion, and tar. Superb width and depth to this wine. Big in flavor and intensity with a large body, and tons of tightly packed, ripe, and sweet fruit - right where it should be. Great amnounts of complexity and intricacy - a somewhat "intellectual" quality I guess - in short, a wine with a lot of soul. Structurally, this wine superceedes the general quality of the vintage as such, and the aftertaste was long, and formidably balanced. Serious. 94 points 1986 La Fleur de Gay, Pomerol, Bordeaux, France Dark red. The bouquet was really something. Intense scents of caramel and chocolate powered out of the glass. In the mouth the wine melted on the palate and dissolved into a rich, chocolate coating with lots of stamina, poise, yet delicacy. Excellent structure and symmetry with a long, balanced aftertaste on notes of moccha, chocolate, and sweet jam. This wine is almost slutty in nature (forgive me if that is an offensive descriptor). More, please... 94 points By itself 1983 Palmer, Margaux, Bordeaux, France Dark red color impression. Scents of summer soil and farm. Medium bodied with a nice, sweet core of ripe fruit, and flavors of cassis. Soft, and very stylish this is, but does the concentration leave a little bit to be desired..? More Palmer hype...? As is, the wine is very, very good with a juicy, chewy texture to it and a nice, long aftertaste on notes of cedar. Not monumental, but very good. 92 points Also by itself 1947 La Croix de Gay, Pomerol, Bordeaux, France Orange brownish color. Scents of acetone and orange peel coming out of the glass. Slightly acidic to begin with, but after a little minute, the wine really blossomed big time. almost Almost 60 years in the bottle, and it only took about 5 minutes for this wine to find its feet. As for texture, the wine displayed good oilyness and there was a great honey-taste mixed in with the tobacco, and fig notes. Delicious and very much alive with a long, balanced aftertaste. Liked it very much. 91 points Also by itself 1989 Rabaud Promis, Sauternes/Barsac, Bordeaux, France Medium yellow color. Scents of apricot, nougat, and expensive perfume. Great, fat, flow across the palate with a botrytis packed, freshly contained sugar shock, and lots of fruit intensity. Big in nature with a long aftertaste. Not really a "feminine" and seductive sweet wine, but the power and glitz interplayed very well, and frankly with our crème brulée desert you couldn't ask for a better companion. Aftertaste on notes of sugar cane, roasted almonds, and hazelnut. 92 points And finally by itself 1996 Stanza Tokaji Escenzia II, Hungary Amber colored with clear sediment. 0.8% alcohol and 700+ grams of residual sugar per litre. It was hard to get this wine out of the glass. Hang on, let me rephrase that. It was hard to get this substance out of the glass. This won't be my most eloquent ever tasting note, so with that disclaimer out of the way, allow me to state that you will get as much joy out of a $3 jar of apricot jam, as you will consuming this "wine". We're dealing with the latest collection of the Emperor's new clothes here, and you will do good to notice that the high asking price relates to the fact that few people even see the clothes. Those people that do see them will argue with my stating that apricot jam spread on toast is preferable. NR Sincerely, Joe Belmaati http://belmaati.com |

Hey Joe,
Thank you for the notes, especially for the Rabaud Promis as I have 1 750. I was worried because WS gave it a pretty low score. But all is good I guess Do you think it will still improve or is it at its peak? |

I completely agree with your assesment on La Fleur de Gay and Le Tertre Rotebeeuf. They are two of the sexiest wines on the planet. This is the case in almost every vintage.

IW----you are correct; in almost every vintage, but definitely not 1992 Le Tertre Roteboeuf! I found a couple of bottles at Sam's at a nice price, while I was in Chicago & bought them on the spot. It was the worst bottle of Le Tertre Roteboeuf I ever tasted! I later found out that Parker had rated it 77 points and I thought he was generous!---The lesson learned; don't buy on reputation & know the score!
