I'm currently planning a trip to Châteauneuf du Pape this August, so I thought that I would open up an appetizer this weekend
2003 Domaine de Beaurenard (Paul Coulon et Fils) Châteauneuf-du-Pape - France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape (6/15/2007) First this gave some red fruit on the nose, but was very closed and tight on the palate, and hot on the aftertaste - as expected. So we decanted for about 3 hours. The result was a very nice Châteauneuf du Pape. Deep red color, with a youthful purple hue. The nose is intense with aromas of dark berries, cherries and blackberries, and a nice hint of mint and pepper. The taste has licorice, concentrated red and black berries. Good intensity and structure. The tannins are still kicking, but very nicely in balance with the rest. (92 pts.)
The conclussion must be that Beaurenard will be worth a visit. Still, I'll give my last two bottles of this and the 2003 Boisrenard a few more years in the cellar.
2003 Domaine de Beaurenard (Paul Coulon et Fils) Châteauneuf-du-Pape - France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape (10/19/2008)
From a 375ml, decanted but drank right away. Medium ruby red. On the nose, dark fruits, spices, licorice. On the palate dark cherries, kirsch, cassis with a medium finish. This wine reflects the '03 vintage with its notes of stewed fruits and heat from a higher than usual amount of alcohol. So far a fair wine. I have more halves and I'm interested to see what this will become.
