  • 2001 Paolo Scavino Barolo - Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo (12/23/2006)
Pre-Christmas Duck and 2001 Barolo Dinner (basecadet's House): Dark ruby colour. Aromas of cinnamon, black cherry, cocoa, and licorice. Medium-full bodied, showing awesome structure and fine tannins. More cinnamon and dark fruit on the palate. Long finish, ~50s, with dark fruit. Fantastic wine, period, let alone for a "base" bottling. Looking forward to following the evolution of this wine. 94+ (94 pts.)

Fut -

Can you compare to the Carobric or Bric del Fiasc?

Unfortunately I haven't tasted the 2001 single vineyard offerings from Scavino. Aside from stating the obvious that Bric del Fiasc is a single vineyard offering, and that Carobric is a blend of Cannubi, Rocche dell'Annunziata, and Bric del Fiasc, whereas the Barolo is a blend of other vineyards - Vignolo, Vignane, and Via Nuova, I can't be of much help.

I've tasted this wine:

Rocche del'Annunziata Riserva 2001
This is THE real thing! The color is deep, the wine is big and elegant with sweet red berries, blackberries vanilla and truffles. The tannins are elegant still provide an excellent structure for aging. The finish is long and great. 99-100

This is part of an excellent tasting at the winery, which is blogged here.

Yaron.

Nuts!

Regular Scavino Barolo.

Heaving bricking throughout. Brownish reddish in color. Smelled of red berries, prunes and toasted walnuts (like sherry a cooking sherry).
Rough tannins, tart raspberries and toasty oak finish that unfortunately lasts too long.

I'm pretty sure this bottle was off.

NR for flawed bottle.

Sounds madeirized, g-man. Don't feel too bad. A lot of Italian wines taste that way.

Just one more sip.

Thank-you for the notes.

I had a similarly priced wine the other day that I personally found even more enjoyable than the 2001 Paolo Scavino Barolo....it was the 2001 Silvio Grasso Bricco Luciani Barolo. This particular wine had enough sophisticated characteristics in nose, delivery and finish that I thought it was as enjoyable as the Paolo Scavino Bric Del Fiasc. Smile

Who's Tutonic?

Anyway, this note was from a year and a half ago, but if I recall we slow-ox'd them for 4 hours while having the wine down into the shoulder. Not positive at this point.

At first grainy tannin that subsided. A little time and I noticed tar, pine and mellow, sweet red fruits. I think this would benefit from some more time in the bottle. I would try back in 5-6 years. 90
