2002 J. & F. Lurton Toro Campo Eliseo - Spain, Castilla y León, Toro (11/2/2009) We opened two bottles with medium rare bone-in ribeyes and crusty baked potatoes, appropriately garnished with sufficient butter and sour cream. The nose at bottle open was strongly of dark chocolate and ripe red fruit, with a hint of coffee. First taste about 30 minutes later, following a gentle decant. Deep purple with edges that seem are browning. Very full-bodied, a bit too much fruit, over-ripe, and what seemed like a ton of alcohol, almost overbearing. Two hours of air and the steaks made this a more pleasing wine, though not particularly complex. The longer the wine decanted, the more evident the cherry notes became. Day two still plenty of alcohol and increasing reminiscent of Gooch's Mexican Wild Cherry Syrup. Will this get any better? I'll try again in another year or two. (88 pts.)
