This was the only wine below the Kabinett level that I purchased from the 2001 vintage. Parker called it one of the finest QbA wines he has ever tasted and gave it 90 points. When I saw it on sale at Sams warehouse sale for $10, I thought I would give it a try. I opened it on Sunday evening with a chicken stir fry which my wife made.
Donnhoff is considered by most to be the best Nahe producer and in the top 5 of all German producers regardless of region. This wine is a blend from his Felsenberg and Kieselberg vineyards. Undoubtedly the fruit has been declassified for this wine as it is at least of the Kabinett level in ripeness. It had 9.5% alcohol.
The wine was a clear straw color. The nose was filled with pear nuances. It was light bodied, quite lively and clearly meant for early enjoyment. No need to bother aging this wine. It was on the drier side for a German Riesling with refreshing notes of tropical fruit, litchie and slate. This stylish effort had good acidity and balance and a clean finish. It matched the stir fry very well. 89-90 points.

Still a good pretty good price. Donnhoff has a great reputation, but my first love are Mosels. I still bought over 3 cases of spatlesen - Niederhauser Hermanshohle, Oberhauser Brucke, Schlossbockelhemier Kupfergrube and hoping to get 6 bottles of the Schlossbockelheimer Felsenberg. I prefer Christoffel's (I bought over 11 cases of them), but in a great year, the Donnhoff's should be amazing with 10+ years of aging, so I didn't want to miss out.
