At dinner on Saturday night, my brother brought a 1998 Cesari Amarone and my brother-in-law brought a 1997 Villadoria Barolo.
I don’t have detailed notes on either of these wines, but my sister tried each wine and said, “I don’t like either one of these.” When I tasted them I knew why she didn't like them: The Barolo actually tasted like a Barolo – it had a definite tar and earth and mineral character that was more prominent than the fruit. And the tannins packed a real whollop at the end, sucking the moisture right out of your mouth. And the Amarone? Well, it tasted like an Amarone – a definite raisiny nose and dried fruit on the palate. Neither was an international style wine; they each really spoke to where they came from.
Although I don’t think I’ll go out and buy either one, I enjoyed tasting both wines. But my sister preferred the 2001 Marquis Philips Shiraz that I brought along as a spare bottle…
