This bottle had to be sacrificed so our group could find out if CSJ made a style of CdP to our liking. This was decanted and poured back into the bottle about 3 hours before drinking. Big nose of raspberry, bramble, coffee and spice. Massive wine with great concentration of raspberry, blackberry and plum flavours on a super long finish. Young and tannic, this wine needs more time, but I definitely liked it enough to try and get some of the 2005. After we drank it, someone mentioned it was 16% alcohol, but I never noticed it. 95 points.

Do not buy this wine. It was overextracted junk. Not worth the money, IMHO. While I also did rate it 95 points and it was my WOTN, I think people will be doing a disservice to themselves by ordering it from the Classics Catalogue.

It is great to know. I loved the regular Châteauneuf, you all know that.

Soooo, I highly recommend that nobody orders this wine. I agree that it is complete crap. I didn't taste the 2004 yet, but jugding by Steve's notes, it sounds like a hell of an aweful wine.

  • 2004 Clos Saint Jean Châteauneuf-du-Pape Deus-Ex Machina - France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape (5/10/2008)
Huge nose of blackberry, licorice and charred oak,tar and stewed plums. Walls of tannins in the mouth but displays elegance and remains well made.Good structure. Dark fruits on a long tannic finish. Screams for more time in the bottle. 4+ years. Solid (95 pts.)
