For the sole benefit of MplsBurgundyDude. He's the only other one on the forums who enjoys this region regularly, which is OK, since it means we get great wines at relatively cut-rate prices!
Price 27 Euros - bought at the winery in Bergheim, Haut-Rhin Decanted No Served at 50F, gone in 1.5 hours, so might have increased 10 to 60F Food pair Alsatian munster (a bit runny) and roasted chicken w/rosemary Colour Golden, light Varietals Unknown specifically. Per winery and fellow tasters from Luxemborg, Deiss now blends (approved) grapes like riesling, gewurztraminer, muscat and pinot gris in the vineyard (Grasberg) so the result is an expression of terroir regardless of the makeup of the varietals. His office/store has a soil sample of each vineyard in clear glass to distinguish the uniqueness of each site. i believe he is also biodynamic, and all that implies, like lunar pull et al. Nose Muted tropical fruits & pears Taste Tropical fruit, wet stones, minerals, oily. not real sweet but a hint Finish Better with the chicken than the cheese, 10W30 in the throat!
Comments See above for winemaking philosophy, also when I was at the winery in June 2002, people were driving up and down from Switzerland & Luxemborg and loading up their car with cases, and I can see why. This is a mid-range wine, his grand crus (Altenborg I believe) go for $60+ in Bergheim, but even his mid-range stuff is distinctive and delicious. I've also had this in Bergheim at the Winstub du Sommolier and it was one of the best wine/food pairings I've had in France ever. Alsatian wines as a whole can go with almost everything except for real red meat and ignoring them just keeps them undervalued for those over here who appreciate them.
