2001 Albert Mann Gewürztraminer Steingrubler - France, Alsace, Wettolsheim, Alsace Grand Cru AOC (3/26/2007)

Jcubed brought this to Zepplans house on Saturday for a 6 course dinner that Zepplans wife made for some of the CWM. Mann is a well respected estate. This wine comes from the Steingrubler vineyard which is located west of Wettolsheim. It has a southeast facing slope and is located at about 1000 feet. The upper part of the vineyard is more sandy and better suited to Riesling, while the bottom has more limestone and is ideal for Gewurztraminer.

This wine was paired with the 2nd course which was a sharp-cheddar cream of potato soup topped with crumbled bacon and fresh chives. Excellent match. I have had the 2000 vintage of this wine several times but this was my first try of the 2001. Just a little behind the 2000 but still an outstanding bottle. Pale yellow color. Moderate+ sweetness. Perhaps a little less sweetness would have been an even better match with the soup. Notes of lemon oil and citrus. Thick and full bodied. 91 points.
