The 2001 Viader seems to "get no respect" from the pro's, but this is a wine I really enjoy!

This combo of 55% Cab Sauv & 45% Cab Franc make this a very special spicy, fruity wine with overtones of minerals. RP gives it 87 points, but I think it deserves a 91/92! Cool

Glad to hear it. I have three bottles and was thinking of popping on myself sometime this year.

You just can't trust those pros sometimes, huh latour? Big Grin

I think you will enjoy your 3 bottles and you'll be glad you have them---unless the Mrs wiml gets to them 1st! Smile

70's Eek Confused I did not know Laube's score! And I thought Parker's score was unduly punitive at 87!-----I really don't like to disagree with Laube & Parker, but I still think my score is closer to being accurate than their score! Eek
I stand by my 91/92!

Latour,

Do you think this is a long term wine? or one that you should drink over the next 2-5 years?

I think it is a long-term wine that can be enjoyed now or in 15 years. The 2001 Viader is not a thin wine and if it is stored at 55 degrees, it should be great in 2020! IMHO!

What is your take on the 2000?

seanr7 Sorry, but I don't remember trying the 2000, but the 1999 is excellent; also I think Viader is a quality winery that would produce very good wines even in a weak vintage!

First I'll say that drinking windows are so subjective and personal. Also, storage is a variable that can't be ignored, and I stored at 52-55 degrees, with that said....I prefer to drink wines with age, so my drinking window for the 1999 Viader would be now to 2015/2020! However, I think Viader drinks great when young, and I'll doubt that I would ever keep a 1999 till 2015/20. Cool

Latour67, I beleive you opened a bottle of the 2000 Viader @ the end of the 1997 Cal Cab tasting/dinner we had @ Equestria in October last year. No formal notes taken that night, but I do remember it being impressive for a 2000 vintage wine. There was a lot of 1997 cabs poured that night so, I can understand that bottle slipping our memory a bit. I beleive the only ones that tasted the wine was you, myself, Tiffany and David, for everyone else had left or was in the process of leaving.

Red Face You are absolutely correct! I forgot! Perhaps too much vino, but no one complains about a 1997 Cal Cab Tasting...How did that 2000 Viader get in there? I think I must've brought it!!! Oh well, seanr7 it was excellent for a wine from the 2000 vintage! Red Face

Thanks for your opinion on the '99. I'm trying to figure out my line-up for my Super Bowl Party.
Looking at the ff '99's:
Viader
Vine Cliff
Phelps
Pride
Cinq Cepages
Isoceles
Chappellet, and
?

I can save you a lot of money for the Super Bowl. Serve Beer, 2004 was a great year for Beer.

S 7,
Sound advise, although I'm kind of dealing with tradition here. Last year the '98 Vine Cliff beat all comers.

2001 Viader Proprietary Red - USA, California, Napa Valley (4/21/2007)
WIML87-88,WA87,WS84

Tasted April 21, 2007 at an offline. Tasted from bottle one of two bottles in a Spiegelau Authentus Magnum glass. Purple color in the glass, clear hue throughout. Nose of black berries, dried herbs, anise, maybe a little plum and the goofy balsalmic aroma. Primary red berry flavors with a little red currant. Light to medium acidity, tannins and body. Drink over the short term. (87 pts.)

2001 Viader Eek

The 2001 Viader is certainly a controversial wine, with ratings from the 70's to the mid 90's!----I had posted (above) that I thought it was a 91/92 pointer, that could be enjoyed young but should mature into a beautiful wine through 2020......Well, I think that statement (whoever said it) "there are no good wines, just good bottles" really fits the 2001 Viader!

Last night I opened another 2001 Viader and found a tannic, out of balance, medium fruit, and a wine that had matured much faster than I had originally anticipated.....What happened? I think there must be plenty of bottle variation with the 2001 Viader!.....

Based on last nights bottle, 85/87 points, with just a small amount of hope that this wine will ever balance, tannins soften, and still have enough fruit to get it back to my original score of 91/92.... Frown
