  • 2006 Weingut Familie Prieler Blaufränkisch - Austria, Burgenland, Neusiedlersee Hügelland (11/5/2009)
I have been reading a book on Austrian wine and that put me in the mood for this. Very pretty ruby with dark blue/black swirls. The nose is very "Zin" like with bramble, raspberries but also this scent that is like a piece of dark chocolate that was left in the cabinet too long and now has a lot of white powder on it. The palate was much better though. Complex and very "old world". Not a ton of fruit but enough to balance the acidity and mild tannins. Lots of layering with raspberries and wet leaves and a very long finish. It went well with food but was still good on its own after dinner. I liked this more than my wife who wanted more fruit and body. (90 pts.)

I had the 2004 Prieler Shutzner Stein last year and gave it a similar score. It is 85% Blaufrankisch.
