My wife, who vehemently opposes my wine buying but stands by my side for the wine drinking, surprised me last pm with 2 bottles: '00 Renwood Grandmere Zin and Graham's 20yr NV Tawny.
The former I opened, splashed in a Vinum Brunello stem, and was overwhelmed by almost medicinal black cherry notes a la Luden Bros cough drops on the nose and by alcohol and black pepper on the palate. I am not a Zin guy, and for some people this might have been heaven -- not for me. So, I decided to decant and sear some Sashimi grade yellowfin w/black and white sesame seeds and an apricot/soy/Grandmere reduction (w/Cajun spiced wild rice and steamed sugar snap peas). 90 min post opening and pared with the above, the Grandmere had calmed down and lost its medicinal edge (good), as well as some of its structure and pepperiness(bad). Bottom line, the wine peaked @ 45 min post decanting (probably a mistake) and earned a solid 85-86 points, given the $23 price tag my wife had left on the bottle.
To be brief about the Graham's 20yr Tawny: Consumed without food or cigar from same stem mentioned above (due to laziness on my part). Absolutely massive with strong notes of apricot, almond, and licorice lasting a full 3 minutes. More intense, but less nuanced and less complex than the (thinner) Sandeman's 20 yr Gold Label I had recently. Definitely deserves to be enjoyed with a CAO Robusto or the like. 89 points, given the retail price of $43.
