- 2005 Vincent Girardin Pommard 1er Cru Les Grands Épenots - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Pommard 1er Cru (9/17/2008)
Good color, very dark and ruby. Minearal, some red fruit and cherry hiding in the wine. Spice: licorice and clove mostly and a little tobacco leaf on the finish. A little complex. Very closed, even after four hours in the decanter the wine has not relaxed a bit. The tannins have good grip and the wine has nice structural elements. A vin de garde. 88-91 pts. (88 pts.) I recently had this and the Jadot Grand Epenots side to side, and the Girardin definitely seems to be made with the stuffing for the longer haul. This one really didn't open up at all, even when the Jadot did after about 3 hours. I enjoyed the tart cherry/cranberry aspect to go with the minerality very much, and would have given this a 90+ with potential for a point or two more, but, to me, the oak was/is a little much today, which hopefully will settle in and integrate with the fruit over the next xx years.
