These Sangiovese wines don't get a lot of publicity and thanks to that, remain quite reasonable in price. The 1997 Carmignano Riserva Villa il Poggiolo is a terrific food wine, not too dark in colour, with a nice nose of violets and cherries. Medium-to-full bodied and very balanced with silky tannins and a crispy acidity. Notes of sour cherries, prunes and sweet herbs. Fresh finish. At its peak now, don't hold any longer. 88 P.
