Tobin James takes a lot of flack (much of which is deserved, BTW) for the party atmosphere of the winery, of the lack of substance in the many of the wines, the “cutesy” label names, etc. Well, the 1999 Reserve Cab is a happy exception. Deep red in color, showing nice spice, plum, and a touch of chocolate, it’s got good acidity and decent tannin structure. It’s a tad thin on the palate, failing to deliver the complexity that’s alluded to in the nose, but it’s a right decent cab. 86 points, drink now-2004.
