I'm looking for tasting notes on any of their 2001 wines. I've tried the Riesling Classic, but want to know what others thought about their wines. Their definitely inexpensive ($6-8 US), so I want to know if they're worth it.

Dan, funny you mention this, I just finished my wife's remaining bottle with some Fried Rice last night. One thing is for certain, they're definitely cheap.

I actually keep a few bottles on hand for various reasons: the wife likes it, it's cheap, wine newbies don't know the difference, it's cheap, it's acceptable plonk with Chinese food, and it's cheap. I don't know if I am ashamed to admit it or not, but I've had the Kabinett, Spatlese, and Auslese. I think the Spatlese is probably the best.

So it should be okay to serve to a bunch of coworkers who don't know anything about wine?
Our company christmas party is tomorrow, and I wanted something different from the beer and white zin that they always have, so I am bringing a bottle of Rioja (LAN Crianza 98) and I was thinking one of the Schlink Haus's.

The difference between what?

The wife likes it, you like it well enough to have picked a favorite from among the various products, you like it well enough to keep a few on hand, you even have certain foods you like it with.

Are you saying that wine 'newbies' might misapprehend and think this is NOT a wine worth buying and drinking?

So, on one hand, we have an inexpensive, apparently pleasant, worth drinking again wine and on the other hand we have...

Oh, is the the stuff that comes in blue bottles (no, not the Schmitt-Sohne in blue bottles, the other blue bottles)?

Yeah, pretty blue and white labels too. That's why I got the Riesling, the wife liked the bottle.

I don't think I'd say "favorite" ... preferred would be a better term. And there is a BIG difference between this and a producer like Christoffel or Thanish when it comes to Spatlese. But, this is just a simple starter German Riesling.

Dan,

If you like the wine, that is all that matters. I am not a fan of this mass produced wine but have not had it in a few years. German wine is so reasonably priced that there is no need to settle for this wine. There are many producers who have better wines for the same price of $8 or less. Try Albrecht Schneider, Bollig-Lehnert, Seebrich or Ernst Bretz off the top of my head. All available in Chicago. These are not top producers but good QPR.

There's a big difference between Thanisch and Thielen and Reinert when it comes to Spatlese. The Kabinetts produced by John Jakob Kuhn - well, if you didn't see the label, you would neveer believe they wre Kabinetts.

I guess my point in my initial reply was that this is a wine found by you to be, as indicated above, good tasting and worth buying. Why disparage it and at the same time disparage new hobbyists?

Oh, re: favorite and preferred

The wine you prefer of the 3 is the wine you favor of the 3. Given your druthers, you'druther drink the Spatlese. It is thus your preference among the 3; therefore, like it or not, it is your favorite among the 3 as well. Prefer yields preference; favor yields favorite.

Ervin, I think you and R2 are talking about two totally different things. You are saying that of the Schlink Haus offerings, he said he prefers the Spatlese, which he stated. But what I think he is trying to say is what VM said. There are better producers than SH, and that even though the Spatlese is his favorite (or preferred) of those, he prefers other wines to the SH wines.

No need to get into a heated discussion over a misunderstanding.

Gusbo, actually it's a Sicilian wine, very small production. I'm lucky to have a few bottles.
