Two hour decant.

Deep violet with a clear edge. Fragrant, polished nose of raspberry and violets. Seamless transition from bright red fruit up front to ample acidity and dark berries on the herbal finish. Soft, huge tannins complement the wine all the way through the finish. Medium-to-full bodied and as refined as any red wine I've had thus far. A little bit of CdP funk lingers for a long time...

Classy and fantastic. A real WOW wine.

40+5+5+18+19+9=96

Do you think this is worth $90?

I was thinking the same thing. I'm guessing it'll go the same route, too.

I bought a case of this in 500 ml bottles, which I had never seen before for any Chateauneuf. I'm hoping it will age a bit faster so I can drink it sooner. Smile

I had the 2005 at a tasting with my brother at a wine shop in St Louis a few months ago and it was quite tasty but with primary flavors. The wine rep pouring the wine said the 2005 wont be as good as a wine as other Cdp for the vintage. He had tasted 2007 from the barrel and said thats the vintage to wait for. Parker gave the 2003 99pts but I have not tried it. The wine rep said the 2000 reservee will be the next Pegau that will drink well in the next couple of years. I usually try my Pegau young and then wait 13 years after the vintage to let them mature.

As a correction, Parker gave the 2003 Cuvee Da Capo 99 points. He never assigned a final score to the 2003 Cuvee Reservee. First it was 92-95, then 95-98.

Regardless, either vintage is surely too young to drink.

As an aside, have you tried any vintages of Pegau prior to 1995? I believe you had a bottle of that with Mimik when he was in Minneapolis. Anything older than that to test the 13-year theory?

Fut,

You are technically correct but unofficially, on the Ebob forums I believe, when served the 2003 reservee blind next to the Da Capo, he couldn't tell them apart and rated the 2003 also 99 points.

You may knoweth of Italian wines but leaveth the Papeth to the King of Pegau.

Let's go with the official reviews compared to whatever the forums say.

And you can keep your crystal balls in Montreal, thanks.

Guys, I buy almost all my Cdp from from premier cru on futures. When the 2003 Pegau reservee was offered on pre arrival there was a parker rating that said 99 pts for the reservee and the whole vintage could be declared a capo. Well they said the pre arrival was sold out at $69.95 so I bought 6 Janasse Chaupin and 6 Mordoree La Reine des Bois Cdp 2003. Then premier cru turned around and got more of the 2003 pegau reservee in stock and is charging $129 a bottle so I passed. As far as having pegau previous to the 1995 vintage I have not to my knowledge although my brother said he poured some prior to the 95 vintage for me before I started getting into wine and starting my cellar. My brother taught in Avignon in the early eighties and started collecting Cdp at that time. I have a magnum of 1998 cuvee laurence and 6 2000 reservee and 9 2001 reservee. It seems to me that I've had alot of Cdp at different stages. Young they tast well and then tend to go through a dump phase phase. I just thought the 1995 reservee was at it's peak at 13 years. I'd had it 3 times before starting in 2000 and it was finally tasting magical.

I cracked my bottle tonight with a Flannery BBQ'd Wagyu Sirloin Tip Roast (quite good). I must say I was not nearly as impressed by this wine as the first poster. No fireworks here. A straight shooter for sure, but nothing to get excited over. Nice delineation, medium/full bodied, everything was in place, but not much of a finish, and not much complexity/intensity of fruit. I enjoy the '04 better to be honest. This was not overly tannic or closed in. In fact I thought it drank rather pleasantly. 3 hours in the decanter didn't change anything. For me...91 pts.

I tried the 04 twice and the 05 once at tastings. The 04 was decanted a couple hours and was showing well as a young wine. The 05 I tried in St Louis with my brother at a wine shop and I thought the fruit was very primary and not showing as well young as the 04.

Ugh, was looking through the cellar this afternoon and noticed minor seepage on 2 of my 2003 reservees that wasn't present 2 weeks ago, I stood them both up and will have one tonight. Hopefully they're okay, if so I'll post a note soon.

Follow up: Great for first 30 minutes, packed full of fruit but a bit short on the aftertaste, fell off from that point though, the fruit retreated and the finish shortened, not sure if it was simply closing down or a bad bottle.
