I bought this red wine from the Languedoc on clearance a month ago for $4. WS rated the 1997 of this wine an 88.

The entire 800 case production of this wine is shipped to the US. It is made from low yielding vines which produce 2.1 tons per acre. The wine is unfiltered, hand picked and handled with care during the winemaking process. It is 13.5% alcohol. The blend for this wine is 80% Syrah, 10% Grenache and 10% old vine Cinsault.

The wine had a reddish purple color. It had a nose of tar and tobacco. The wine was disappointing (if a $4 wine could be disappointing) and the notes were rather bitter with dark fruit, cassis and smoke. The finish was long but presented some rather strong unpleasant flavors. The wine improved slightly with some air. 79-81 points.
