Has anyone else recently had the enjoyment of experiencing the 2003 Numanthia Numanthia? It seems, imho, an incredible value that can be enjoyed young.

Rated 96 by RP,

“The 2003 Numanthia was fashioned from yields of one ton of fruit per acre (from a clone of Tempranillo that often has the highest polyphenols of any Tempranillo clone). This cuvee is made from 70- to 100-year-old vines planted at a 2,300 foot elevation, which no doubt accounts for the freshness in this massively rich, intense red. A vivid, intense nose of espresso roast, pain grille, sweet black cherries, and creme de cassis is followed by a full-bodied, intensely-concentrated, rich, well-delineated, moderately structured, pure red that can be drunk young or cellared for a decade”.
96 Points Robert Parker

I tried this some months ago (it's everything Parker said) and instantly fell in love with it. When originally tried with friends all our mouths fell open and just said 'wow'. Since then, I've continued to search, and purchase, this wine when I find it under $50. Originally purchasing this at $39, I've only seen the price continue to climb as availability shrinks.

Has anyone had the opportunity to compare this to the now available 2004?

I completely agree with your note. I had this a couple months ago and we LOVED it. It's become very hard to find as most stores have the 2004 on the shelves (at a higher price than the '03). I bought a couple bottles of the '04 but have not tried it yet. Will post when I do.

Looking good. Just bought 4 bottles, which I should be picking up tomorrow. I might try one next weekend - as it sounds really good.

That's the one steve8. Just getting used to the forum format and your link provided interesting reading to other's opinions. Sorry they found it too acidic. I've had about 6 bottles of this now and, letting it decant about an hour, I just haven't experienced this. Admittedly, I've found myself to enjoy the aromas SO MUCH I sometimes have to remind myself to pull my nose out of the glass Smile.

I've been enjoying some of the Spanish wines while letting the Barolos and BdM sleep.

Thank you for the welcome. I'm really enjoying this forum. Some very insightful reviews/opinions.

You need to know that Mimik was weaned on jammy Oz fruit bombs so he's really sensitive to acidity. We're exposing him to more balanced wines so he's starting to come around now. Big Grin

You might be well served to stuff your 2003 Numanthia's in the back of your cellar with your Barolos and BdM's. I recently had a 2001 Numanthia and even with a splash decant 8 hrs before dinner and then 2 hrs in the decanter, it was young and vibrant. These things will probably be best with 10 yrs on them, or at least give them 5 years since its hard to know for sure how well they age since the first vintage was 1998.

Chilepepper, thanks for the advice. I'll be sure to put some to the back. Nevertheless, I must admit I'm 'personally' loving this one young. RP suggests 10 yrs of life to this. It'd be interesting to follow this one along and see just how well it does age. All that to say I appreciate your input.

edited to correct placement of input...

Thanks for the invitation steve8. I'm sorry to say I'll be out of town until March 9 - 13. If the group is up to a wine gathering any time then, I'd be happy to meet you all.I DO realize it's not 'all about me' Smile. I'm certain we're sure to meet up sooner or later. I will be at Yo-yo's on the 11 for a b-day dinner with friends. A great BYOB place, if you've not tried it already.

Work responsibilities have been getting in the way of my social life. It can suck at those times.......

  • 2003 Bodega Numanthia Termes Toro Numanthia - Spain, Castilla y León, Toro (8/24/2008)
Splash decanted for 2 hours. Burgundy in color. Deep and viscous in the glass. Lush aromas of Black berries, smoke, tabacco, spices and cassis. The dark berry and smoke carry to the palate. The tannins are prevelant but not dominating. Nice complexity in the mouth however still a bit disjointed. Big and lush mouthfeel with a long finish. Time is slowly improving the balance of this wine. (93 pts.)
