2000 Emidio Pepe Montepulciano d'Abruzzo - Italy, Abruzzi, Montepulciano d'Abruzzo (7/19/2008) After my experience with the '77 vintage of this wine I was curious how a younger incarnation of this wine would taste. The most recent one I could get hold of was the '00:
Initially some very peculiar aromas like rubber and candy sticks. Three hours after opening the bottle I wrote the following note:
Ruby colour. Full aromas of black fruit and licorice. Following trough full bodied with lots of fruit and fresh acidity and some pepper tones. The tannins are very special, a layer of mouth covering silk is what best describes this to me. The finish is ultra long, and keeps on lingering on the palate. Based on the '77 I had recently, I would expect that this wine will keep on developing over the next 20-30 years. But its a special experience to drink it now. If you do so, give it some time to open up! Drink now - 2030.
Its hard to describe this wine with the regular descriptors that I've come used to. Let me finish by saying that this is a very special wine. In many ways this wine is extraordinary. The only reason for not rating this wine higher than 91pts is the fact that it lacks the complexity (which the '77 did have) that I want to see in an Outstanding/Extraordinary wine. But it does belong north of 90pts.
If you want to taste a truly fascinating wine, that is one of its kind as far as my experience reaches, try this one! (91 pts.)
