2007 Seghesio Family Vineyards Zinfandel Sonoma County - USA, California, Sonoma County (10/26/2008) WOW!!! Feeling the love from this Zin. Popped and poured, deep red/purple wine. Nice brambly fruits on the nose, blueberries, some spice and vanilla with a nice finish. Very smooth- no heat, nice acidity, fne tannins. I've always liked the Seghesio Sonoma County bottling and this is the best vintage I have tasted. I'm backing the truck up on this one. (92 pts.)
With 68,000 cases made there might be some bottle variation. I hope my next bottle treats me as well as the first. After reading your note I'll try another one before going long. Thanks for the input.

I bought a bottle this past weekend, and we had most of it last night. Very good stuff, incredibly well balanced in this price point, but just a tad cloying. I agree with the notes, but got more dusty earth on the palate. 91pts., and a smidge more acidity would have given it another point or two from me. Paid $21, and will buy more, especially if I can find it near $15. Great sipper, with or without food. Will probably improve over the next couple of years.

2007 Seghesio Family Vineyards Zinfandel Sonoma County - USA, California, Sonoma County (10/27/2008) I'm divided on this wine. On one hand it is fairly light on its feet and has a relatively nimble texture for a zin, while on the other it has some of the downfalls of slightly overripe and jammy fruit. It also has higher acidity than most zins and some red fruit on the entry before ending with more of a plum and blackberry ripe finish. A little thin and lacking mid palate for a ripe, big zin style, but jammy for a lighter, more food friendly style. So I consider this a compromise wine that does not commit to either style, but will be appreciated by fans of both, while not being exceptional by either camp. I got this for $17 and am quite happy at that price. (89 pts.)

In general, I agree with vinole's statement that the Seghesio zin is a good compromise style. I think the 2007, like past vintages, will gain better balance with short or mid term aging, and the bright acidity to it will support it over the next several years at least. Right now, right out of the bottle, the fruit is a little too dominant and the wine is not quite in its best balance.
I had a 2002 Seghesio Sonoma County zin from a 375 in the last year, and it was still going strong, probably with many good years ahead.

That 2002 was brilliant. My favorite. This 2007 is very good now but, while it doesn't need age as desperately as the 2005, I agree that it will improve.

Popped and poured with a cheese, sauasge, black olive & mushroom pizza. No formal notes, but thought it was varietally correct. Very enjoyable in the now, great fruit, round body and nice finish. Would buy more for later.
For those that care, this wine came in at #10 on WS top 100 today.

this kicks the shit out of the 06. real time. hands down.
out of a ghost crew tonight, we had only 5 bottles/tasters. 2 were duplicates of this. granted it had no competition, so my comment "better than the 06" is based seperately from tonights tasting.

I picked up 4 yesterday at under $18. They had it by the case. The local Wegman's also had a case on the shelf. Planned on picking some more up, but probably not likely now that it's on the Top 10, but then again, they may still have it. We'll see! -mJ

picked up a 375ml to try with some Manchego before dinner... it was $7.99 Seaquam
popped and poured... nice dark coloring, didnt really note the nose but man was it sweet to start, all oak and boysenberry pie extracts... after about 15 min it calmed down somewhat and was a nice sip, extracted and juicy, still bordering sweet with blueberry & blackberry in the mouth, medium bodied, ending fruity as well with a little kick of pepper... not bad, and worth it at the price point for a nice house wine, though not real exciting either... a cookie cutter Zin that reminded me almost of a Rosenblum
I brought this to a Thanksgiving potluck dinner, and it performed quite admirably. Nice, deep ruby color, started out with a very briary nose that softened with less than 30 minutes aeration in the bottle. This did not seem overdone at all to me. Lots of juicy raspberry and just hints of plum, with a mildly spicy finish. Not very complex, but Zins south of $35 rarely are in my experience. 89-90 in my book, but for $18, I'm very pleased.

I did not take formal notes, but I thought this was a very nice zin. It had lots of dark berry aromas and flavors with a nice brambly note and some spice. While ripe, it didn't come across to me as sweet/cloying. Overall, a very nice wine and a good buy at the price.
