  • 1999 La Chablisienne Chablis 1er Cru - France, Burgundy, Chablis (10/10/2005)
One of the best Chablis I've had in a long time. Light gold color with a hint of green. The nose was quite muted immediately after opening, but it opened up in the glass with vibrant aromas of mineral dust, citrus, and granny smith apples. On the palate, this wine had a lot of complexity: apples, lime, honey, and a little butter, all backed up with tons of minerals and nice acidity. A little wood gave this wine some body - it is much fuller than most Chablis I'm familiar with - not austere at all. Very long finish of 30+ seconds. (93 pts.)

grab the la chablissienne 02 -- great notes on the 99 -- I love this wine. Ran these head to head with a Lucien Les Moine and two oaky cali chards at a dinner and the La Chablisienne was the wotn. Great flinty mineral stuff. I find it austere, but food friendly austere like the best of chablis.

I was really impressed with this, and will definitely take your advice and seek out some '02. If you don't mind me asking, what other Chablis producers do you like? I've only recently gotten into French whites, and I'm finding there's a whole 'nother world out there!

I guess when I say austere, I think of very one dimensional, almost too light-bodied wines. This one definitely had some substance to it, and paired very well with the risotto and salmon we had for dinner last night. Thanks!

Your wine worlds will collide eventually. There will be violence in the cellar.

They already are colliding. Like taking a bunch of kids on a long car trip, you gotta keep them separated! The Cali Cabs on one side, the French ones on the other side, and a whole lotta "Don't make me pull this car over!" Smile
