NOTE: there is one other thread by pelochain that contains a review of the 1982 Montrose but it is embedded as part of a larger tasting. Started a separate thread here just for this wine by itself.

1982 Château Montrose - France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe (4/13/2007)
WIML92,WA90,~WS90-96

Tasted April 13, 2007 at an offline. Opened and decanted for sediment right before serving. Dark garnet color in the glass, clear hue throughout. Nose was a little tight giving way to some aromas of cedar, white pepper and maybe some wet slate. Eventually opened to reveal some roasted coffee notes and perhaps some dark fruits. Flavors of black cherries, black licorice and black berries. Medium acidity and tannins, medium to full bodied. Drink or hold. (92 pts.)

I enjoyed this wine yet again this week with skosh and others.

The best bottle yet without question.

This wine is still so youthful with absolutely no signs of ageing, none.

This bottle was showing wild blackberries and currant, with a wonderful mineral streak from forward palate to finish. The spicy finish left you wanting more and the tannins will soon be in harmony with this rich beauty.

This bottle was a solid 97+ point wine.

Nice! Was this bottle sourced from the same location as the bottle we enjoyed in Philadelphia?

Interesting. I liked the Philly bottle a little better than wiml (94) but this bottle sounds markedly better. Think I'll shoot an e-mail to the generous soul who provided these bottles and see if there are more out there. Grazie!

Had the chance to enjoy yet again last night.

Not much to add to above except that this was the 3rd bottle in the last 5 weeks. They ALL have been wonderful bottles and very consistent with a bright future.

Bravo

Top end of the 82s are really hitting their stride now. Those that were patient and let them sit are being rewarded. The best from St. Estephe and Pauillac are almost scary how youthful they are. St. Julien are charming.

Hate to think of how many bottles got slaughtered too young.

I always wanted to be a procrastinator.

Opened last night and corked!

It really just makes me sick that a darn cork can just ruin a potentially great wine.

Grrr...

Back in the saddle again after a corked bottle last time.

This bottle was showing as well as any we have enjoyed. A nose of berries, truffle and cedar, with still fresh fruit and spice on the palate with light tobacco and cherry on a seemless finish.

Very nice!

This one is just for wine + art since he decided to shun us last night... Wink

1982 Château Montrose - France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe (9/13/2008)
WIML93

Tasted September 13, 2008 at an offline.

Opened and decanted for sediment only. Dark garnet color in the glass, slight cloudy looking. Nose of leather, anise, perfume and berries. Silky flavors of berries, cherries and currants. Medium acidity and tannins, medium to firm body. Drink or hold with good provenance. Just a tick better than the bottle I tasted in Philadelphia so upping that score by a point. (93 pts.)

Thanks for the note Joe.

This is a wine that you never know. The one we had in Philly was good, the two we had later for my birthday were stunning, then a corked, before great again.

I'm glad you all opened this last night! Big Grin
