Medium-red to rim. Nose of cedar, bramble, cassis, and pepper. Full bodied with lots of tannin and spice. Hot in the mouth. Needs a heck of a lot of time if it’s going to come together. 85 points.

Medium red, with an enticing nose of cassis, red berries and cedar. Smooth mouthfeel, medium bodied with more cassis, berries and tobacco. Then it seems to disappear just when things are getting interesting. Reminds of some girls I new in high school. 87 points

mitchie, did you decant this at all? I have 2 more of this and have tasted it twice. I thought it was a good Canadian (BC) red but no QPR. I had read a tn from one of the Cdn critics to try after 2005. What are your thoughts, seems like it's a "drink up"!
What about the 2001??? We bought one bottle at the estate last year and really liked it, though it is probably not made for aging. Any thoughts on this??

It was decanted for about an hour, I drank it with a med. rare rack of lamb, which might have taken the edge off of the tannins. It seemed ready in my opinion, but I too have read that Oculus in general needs time to come together and often puts on weight in the bottle. Gismondi on Wine link has tasting notes of several vintages of Oculus, but not 2000. I think it's a good Canadian red, but the short finish was a little bit of a let down. The best Canadian red I've had recently is the 2001 Jackson-Triggs Okanagan Prop. Grand Reserve Meritage, that is a 90+ pointer.

Yuck. And when I foolishly purchased the '02s of this as an experiment(BC's vintage of the century), I was laughed at by my own countrymen ! I'd ditch the '01s in the pasta sauce.

I'm with you Mishy, I bought a bottle of the '02 Oculus while visiting the Okanogan Valley a year or two ago, and my tasting notes revealed a bit of depression at the price I paid and what I got out of it...

I honestly normally wouldn't buy anything from Mission Hill, however I did have a freaky-good experience with the Shiraz '00. Usually, there's just way too many good other local options around. Nice patio restaurant there tho
