This was a contender for WOTN and had the lead over a '78 Shafer Cab., until the Shafer pulled ahead after 2 hours of decanting. Much better than a bottle I had about a month ago. Dark ruby with hints of black. Slight ambering around the ages. Amazingly youthful. Moderate tannin, and full of fruit. Blueberry pie, blackberry, brown spice, tobacco, dark plum, chinese five spice, wet earth, mineral, and cedar. Full bodied. Still has plenty of life left. Long finish. Great mouthfeel. Awesome wine. 96 pts.

  • 1961 Château Lynch-Bages - France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac (9/14/2008)
Uncorked and allowed to stand for 5 hours before tasting. Clear rim, but still a good garnet color through the center. An expressive nose dominated by the old wine character. On the palate, there was red fruit in the background with generous spice along with the funky earth and leather flavors. Great balance and fully integrated tannins. Held up for nearly an hour after pouring before it started to fade. (95 pts.)

Hopefully your batting average will hit 0.667 with that bottle. Wish I had more, but thankful for the experience.

Good dr, any notes on the 78 Shafer? Was it the regular napa bottling?

Had this again last night and surprisingly different, but just as awesome. This was a British bottled version...can't remember the name. This time a good deal of wintergreen and mint showing on the nose, along with sweet tobacco, and plum. Very full, loaded glycerin filled midsection. Long finish. No fading after 2 hours in the decanter. Lovely wine and still full of life. 96 pts.

I preferred the '62 to the '61.

Just one more sip.

Ahhh, what a letdown. When I saw you posted on this Board-O, I was hoping you had ridiculed Drab for drinking this too young. Smile

That aside, nice notes Drab. I'm very jealous because that's my birth year.

There's no question now, imo, that the 1961 is now the better of the two.

Are 61's still drinking well? I picked up a few as part of a lot and was not sure if I should sell them as they may not be drinking well.

sticky2...it's only one of the greatest vintages for Bordeaux in the past century. While many are tired, the legends still live on.

Can I play as well?

I would pick the '59, '29 and perhaps one day, the '89. Wink
