These Rheinhessen wines were poured at Vinexpo last week. As good as the
2002 Gunderloch Nackenheimer Rothenberg TBA was, I was not impressed by the 2003 wines poured by Gunderloch. I thought the 2001's and 2002's were better.
Here are my notes:
2003 Gunderloch Riesling Nackenheimer Rothenberg Spatlese- This wine suffered from the same sulpher problem that the
2002 Spatlese exhibited. It should recede with some age but is unpleasant at present. On the palate, it is a nice wine with apple and slate notes. I wasn't entralled though. 88-89+ points.
2003 Gunderloch Riesling Nackenheimer Rothenberg Auslese- A far cry from the
2002 Auslese or the
2001 Auslese. This was recently bottled and I suspect that it may have been suffering from travel shock and a bit closed. This was just not what you would expect from Fritz Hasselbach. 89-90+ points.
Stefanie Hasselbach, Fritz's daughter, was also pouring the following wine from the 2000 vintage:
2000 Gunderloch Riesling Nackenheimer Rothenberg Auslese Goldcap- Again this was nowhere near the prodigious
2001 GKA from Gunderloch. Notes of pear and slate; but, you could taste the wetness of the vintage in the musty fruit and lack of depth and crispness. Still a fine effort in this difficult year. 91 points.
