Darker and more full-bodied than the ’97, but not as vibrant or expressive. Lovely nose of sweet strawberry and subtle herbs. Palate is lead by strawberry but also has a tartness more akin to cherry. Tannins are well-integrated, but the palate started out somewhat acidic. As usual, more extensive aeration brought out more leather and tobacco notes, but still dominated by red fruits. I think this needs more time than the ’97 (which was wonderful last August). 93 for now.

Thanks for the note, stickman. Sounds like this wine has a long, long life ahead of it and isn't quite ready yet.

Honestly, I was hoping to open my first '96 Asili Riserva sometime this year, and this bottle was intended to serve as a bit of an advance scout to see if the Asili might be ready. Um, that would appear to be a no. Frown Patience... patience...
