1995 Col d’Orcia ~ Brunello di Montalcino Riserva ~ Poggio Al Vento
14% alc. Techno stuff: 25 days of maceration in wide and short stainless steel tanks, then aged in Slavonian and French oak casks for 4 years followed by 18 months in bottle. Comes from a single vineyard planted in 1974.
Medium ruby red, no signs of thinning at the edge. A little tight at the onset, but with a few hours to open-up magnificent nuances began to unfold. Balancing power and finesse, Poggio Al Vento exudes an alluring bouquet of cherries, wet stones and earth, and dried flowers. A deceptively big n’ spicy mouthfeel offers subtle layers of complexity that lead to a sweeping, graceful finish. After six hours of being open this was a symphony in a glass. 4 stars (95 pts)

Super Stellar Brunello! Mental note for self: buy other vintages of this, and don’t open any more of the 95’s for 3-5 years.

A great Brunello, really, I give it 92, but 97 Poggio al Vento will be better! YUM YUM.

..it's a black fly in your Chardonnay, isn't it ironic.. don't you think?

Dark ruby colour; opaque. Aromas of earth, cherry, leather, sottobosco, spice, chalk, and a hint of rosemary. Medium-full bodied, still pretty tannic, with sottobosco, leather, cherry, and currant notes. Beautiful wine with great structure. Needs another couple years, although it does open a bit with time. 92 points (11/16/2005).

  • 1995 Col d'Orcia (Cinzano) Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Poggio al Vento - Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino (7/13/2007)
Birthday Dinner #1 w/ basecadet & mimik (Toba Restaurant, Toronto, Canada): Not decanted. Poured into shoulder and allowed to breathe for an hour. Dark ruby colour with black tinges. Aromas of black olive tapenade, black cherry, sottobosco, minerals, herbs/rosemary, and mint. Medium-full bodied, restrained, with mineral, sottobosco, leather, black cherry, and currant notes. Firm tannins, fantastic structure, and great acidity. Moderate-long finish, ~40s. This wine opened up nicely over the course of two hours. No rush on this wine, and I figure that I'll wait until 2010 to drink my last bottle. Fantastic stuff! 92+ points. (92 pts.)
