Tasted 10/07.

Nose of blackberry, kirsch, cassis, tar, compote, crushed stone and dried flowers (mostly sweet dark fruit).

Starts of with ripe black fruit and transitions to kirsch and minerals in about 10 sec. Starts to get grippy 15-20 sec later.

Long finish (30-45 sec) of sweet black fruit, figs and dried currants. Lovely.

91-92 pts.

(yes, we did commit infanticide, but the ’01 was much less dear than the ’99 or ’95 on the list)

2001 Il Poggione (Roberto Franceschi) Brunello di Montalcino - Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino (5/15/2008)
WIML91,PURPLE91

Tasted May 15, 2008

No formal notes. Popped and poured. Garnet to dark garnet color in the glass, clear hue throughout. Little bit of Bunello funk on the nose when first poured giving way to some nice notes of black berries, leather and a little florals. Flavors of black cherries and berries. Good acidity and tannins, medium body. Still pretty youthful but I'd say it's open for business or can be held as desired. PURPLE says "I thought it was a little tight but good acidity, nice strawberry, bright cherry. Went very well with the steak, 91 pts" (91 pts.)

WIML, thanks for the notes.
At least both of you agree on the points!

I've only one bottle of this. I guess it will survive another year or two in the cellar?

I bought a case of this on release and was not planning on opening any until 2010-2011.

I don't know if Vintages released it... I suppose it's possible that licensees could have scouped up most of it, in either case. It's floating around the US at $60 a bottle, pretty well everywhere I've seen it.

Had this 1 week ago and, freely admitting that Italian is my weakest area, I thought that this needed (significantly) more time in the bottle. Acidity and tannins were pretty strong and hopefully these will even out and let the fruit catch up. I thought that this was more in the red fruit than dark fruit vincinity, with good potential, but won't pop another for a year or so.

2001 Il Poggione (Proprietá Franceschi) Brunello di Montalcino - Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino (6/30/2009)
WIML92

Tasted double blind at an offline.

Dark garnet color in the glass, clear hue throughout. Nose of perfume, berries, a bit of fertilizer and some notes of thistle. Rick flavors of black cherries and black berries. Bright acidity, medium to firm tannins, medium to full bodied.

My guess was this is a 2002 Ribera del Duero (ACK!). (92 pts.)

Eek This one is definitely on the traditional side.
