From 375ml bottle:

Put in the fridge and brought out to warm up 15 mins before serving. Too cold - I think I like Sauternes warmer than German desert wines - maybe it's the acidity. Whether it was the temp or the fact that this needs a bit of air time, not much nose on opening and mostly orange peel flavors.

After about 1 hour of air and warming up a bit, things started to really come together. Nose of white flowers - honeysuckle, acacia and orange. Flavor profile really filled out - now orange marmalade, honey, touch of almond and a bit of perfume? Medium bodied for a Sauternes - not too syrupy. My wife and I drank this over the next hour or so - it continued to develop in the glass during that time.

Tasty wine - I have a couple more halves of this in the cellar but I'm going to hold of on opening them for a while. 93pts

We had this at an off-line in December thanks to Rothko, and I thought it was excellent.

Brief notes here:

It just so happens that AllRedATT opened a bottle of this for some of the CWM on Saturday at Blue Ovals home after his Rhone dinner. This was served with a white chocolate mousse cake with raspberry sauce which my wife purchased at a local bakery.

I purchased 6 half bottles of this on futures for $17.50 each and am glad I did. WS gave this 95 points and the WA gave it 96. The bottle opened by AllRed was a 750ml. It was not overchilled.

This was my WOTN. A medium gold color. Delicate aromas of honey and citrus which opened more in the glass. A concentrated well structured effort. Notes of apricot marmalade, spiced fruit and orange peel. Wonderful overall package with balanced biting acidity. Long focused finish. 95+ points.

Thanks AllRed.

IMO this wine is one the best sauternes from the outstanding '01 vintage. The last time I had it I gave it 95pts. VinoMe that is a great price.

While it was very good, it wasn't showing as well as the 375 which I finished over 3 days. 93 points from 750 at Blue Oval's, due to not having been open long enough. Notes on the 375 below.

  • 2001 Château Lafaurie-Peyraguey - France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes (4/4/2005)
Saturday 4/2/05: Opened the morning of an offline dinner, poured a taste and left open to get some air. Chemical notes on the nose, a quick taste shows citrus and good balance. More people were coming to the offline, so this was corked back up and put in the fridge in favor of a 750. Score reserved. Sunday 4/3: Brought to Dad's for dinner. Chemical note is gone, replaced with citrus and honey, good but needs some more air. Remaining half of the bottle was vaccu-vinned and put in the fridge. 93 pts. Monday 4/4: The last half of the 375 was brought to Randy & Laura's while watching the NCAA game. This bottle has now been open since 8:00 AM Saturday morning. Notes of honeysuckle blossoms, orange peel, honey and apricots. Palate is lush and viscous, with great balance and acidity. Flavors of citrus peel, honey and peaches. Great stuff. (96 pts.)

I've had it twice and have been very impressed with it. I do think that time will improve the LP also.

Light yellow colour. Aromas of honey, ginger snaps, white flowers, orange blossoms, apricot. Full-bodied, sweet, balanced acidity, with ginger, vanilla, peach, apricot, honey. Long finish, 50s, with honey, citrus/orange rind. Not fair in having to follow the 1983 d'Yquem, but still very good. 93 points (05/14/2005).

NOTE: there are two threads on this wine. This is the oldest.

    2001 Château Lafaurie-Peyraguey - France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes (10/17/2009)
    WIML93?

Tasted October 17, 2009 at an offline.

Yellow color in the glass, clear hue throughout. Nose of apricots, almonds, a bit of melon and a bit of honeysuckle. Flavors of honey, almonds and a bit of apricot. Think and unctuous on the palate without being cloying. Medium acidity, medium to full bodied. Drink or hold over the long term. (93 pts.)
