First of all, I wanna take the opportunity to say thanks to all the people that took time and responded to the topic I posted

I have just started to get interested in German wine recently. Honestly, i don't know too much about German wine, and I do not have the experience to really appriciate what these wine has to offer yet, espeically the higher-end and
more expensive ones.

But since almost everything I have read so far suggested that 2001 is the best vintage for like the past 25 years, I want to buy a few nice 2001 wines for aging. Hopefully after drinking lots of german wines for the next 15 years, I will have a few nice bottles to enjoy when I turn like 40 or older.

This is the list of wines I am considering now, and I am having much trouble deciding which of them will worth the 10- 15 years wait.

Fritz Haag GKA
Eitelsbucher Karthausehofberg Auslese #44
Dr.Loosen Erderner Pralet GKA
Dr.Loosen Urziger Wurzgarten GKA
Dr.Loosen Berncasteler Lay Eiswein
Dr.Loosen Wehlener Sonnerher GKA
Scholoss Johannisberg Esiwein
Robert Weil Auslese
Zilliken gka (auction)
Wgon Muller GKA (auction)
Steinberger GK Eiswein (auction)
JJ Prum Auslese (auction)
Robert Weil BA
Robert Weil Eiswein
Dr.Loosen Erderner Trepchen Eiswein
Scholoss Vallard GKS (auction)
Staatsweingut GKS (auction)

For someone who does not enjoy the dry wine as much, which of the wine(s) above would you suggest to get ? Also, when do u think will be the prime time for these wines? (Since i cannot afford to get many bottles of each of these wine, I don't have the luxury to look for the prime time myself)

Thanks again for reading and responding to this posting. You can either post respond here or e-mail me at ioWai2002@yahoo.com . thanks

I'd be interested in seeing comments on this as well. Plus, if anyone could offer opinions in general about the best producers and specific bottlings to look out for too, that would be dandy.

drys as well as sweeter, too (for me)

leesunhee- The Weil, Loosen and Prum look good but as with everything it depends on the price.

TJ- Here is a post from 3 months ago where we discussed the best German producers:

All of the wines that I bought or are looking for will be great in 15 years (see the drinking period in parentheses). I don't see the need to buy BA's, TBA's or Eisweins. They are very expensive while the rest are very reasonable. Frankly, I think someone new would enjoy the Kabinets, QBA's and estate rieslings better. I'll be buying those later for everyday drinking.

Sorry, but I can't comment on those on the list (other than J.J. Prum). For what it's worth, I'll list what I have bought and what I paid for them. I've already bought 9 cases of futures.
Bought:

Donnhoff Oberhauser Brucke Spatlese Nahe $37.00 (8-25 years)
Donnhoff Niederhauser Hermanshohle Spatlese Nahe $39.95 (8-25)

Muller-Catoir Haardter Herrenletten Spatlese Pfalz $35.00 (7-22)

Selbach-Oster Zeltinger Schlossberg Auslese Mosel $25.00 (9-30)
Selbach-Oster Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Auslese Mosel $27.00 (10-33)

Muller-Catoir Haardter Burgergarten (2134) Spatlese Pfalz $34.95 (8-25)

J. J. Christoffel Erdener Trepchen Spatlese Mosel $23.00 (9-28)
J. J. Christoffel Urzinger Wurzgarten Auslese
Mosel $24.95 (12-30)
J. J. Christoffel Urzinger Wurzgarten Auslese** Mosel $39.00 (13-30)

Strub Niersteiner Paterberg Spatlese Rheinhessen $18.00 (8-23)

Looking for:
J. J. Christoffel Urzinger Wurzgarten Auslese* Mosel $32.00 (12-30)
If anyone finds it, I'll take up to 3 cases.

Planning to Buy:
J. J. Prum Wehlener Sonnenuhr (spatlese or auslese)
Maxim Grunhauser Abtsberg Auslese

leesunhee,

first of all,
2001 is not one of the best vintages of the last 25 years!

suggestion for the 2001:

Fritz Haag GKA (i do like fritz haag, wehlener sonnenuhr, but since 1990 he had to take out most
old vines, this is called "flurbereinigung" if
you like i'll explain it later! but since than
he couldnt make special wines (my oppinion)!

Eitelsbucher Karthausehofberg Auslese #44,
i'm not a fan of his wines and i did not try the 2001 so far.

Dr.Loosen Erderner Prälat GKA
Dr.Loosen Urziger Wurzgarten GKA
Dr.Loosen Wehlener Sonnenuhr GKA,
the only vinyard from loosen i like is erdener
prälat, it's the one with the greatest minerality
and comlexity! but in 2001 he almost had no botrytis and his wines are not as good as they can be!

Dr.Loosen Berncasteler Lay Eiswein,
2001 not tryed, don't no!

Schloss Johannisberg Eiswein,
never had a top wine from this estte!

Robert Weil Auslese
a great year for weil, one of the top of the
vintage, almost all kiedricher gräfenberg are top, from the spätlese to the TBA!

Zilliken gka (auction)
not tryed yet!

Egon Muller GKA (auction),
good wine, scharzhofberger to expensive, wiltinger braune kupp almost as good this year
and 1/3 price!
kabinett and spätlese and auslese non GK
are not good this year!

Steinberger GK Eiswein (auction)
never had wine from this estate!

JJ Prum Auslese (auction)
only the auction wine are good but prices went
way up!

Robert Weil BA
unbeleveble good, expensive but worth every cent!
i bought some [Big Grin]

Robert Weil Eiswein
not as fantastic as the 1996, but also a great wine! i bought some [Big Grin]

Dr.Loosen Erderner Treppchen Eiswein
not tryed!

Scholoss Vallard GKS (auction)
i guess you ment schloss vollrads [Roll Eyes]
they were top bevor the 85' since then never
had a good wine from vollrads!

Staatsweingut GKS (auction)
[Confused] never heart from a staatsweingut!
only hungary has a staatsweingut called in the past kereskedehaz or borkombinat!

cheers!

I second most of Tsunami's comments except I do believe 2001 to be amongst the best vintages certainly this decade.

yes i agree it's the best year this decade!
2001 better than 2000! [Wink]

will see what these decade brings to us [Roll Eyes]

reasons for my oppinion:

i already tried about 20 producers 2001
and most havent made exeptional wines.
i really do love german rieslings, over 100 bottles at my cellar dos proove it. i love the minerality, the comlexity paired with an light footed, explosive style.
but,
most 2001 i tried, wasn't focused, balanced,
clean minerality.
they were compaired with earlier arrivel tastings
some kind of slow, not exotic, just very appel-like, some like e.müller had a acidity who went up the nose like horseradish dos, without been balanced from a nice sweetness or ripness.
so if you had tasted 20 top-producer and over
100 differend wines, founding only 4-5 producer
and max 12 wines great, would you say it's
a big year, best for the last 25 years?? [Confused] ??

i remind me,
how wonderfull some 1999's like egon müllers were
how exiting the 1996 eisweins were!!
how good the 1995 weil were
how just incredible ripe some 1990 89 and 88 were
how good some 1985 were
how just incredible good all 1983 j.j.prüm's were
how wonderfull some 1976 were!

i can't beleve it, after i tryed so manny wines!
we'll see in a couple years, if i'm wrong.

Tsunami,
Whenever I've tried young German wines they tend to lack complexity. Often the best vintages don't show through until a few years have passed. 1990 is a prime example of that. I to love German riesling but I do believe 2001 to be better than any vintage in the last ten years -overall. The consistancy of the wines as well as the broad level of quality outshines many other vintages. Having said that I haven't tried many 2001 German Riesling yet, I have tried huge numbers of German rieslings from a number of good to great vintages however. Mostly I am going by wine makers reports and friends I have in Europe who haven't led me astray yet.
However I guess time will tell.
