Anybody have any experiences to share regarding the 1997 Alessandro Brero Barolo Poderi Roset, released Sept.15th.,2007 by the LCBO. Other Barolos, Gattinaras etc., that I have enjoyed from that vintage, and in this price range, were exceptional. Smile

Thank-you, futronic. After a little searching....I noticed on "ebob" that this particular Barolo had some nice things said about it by others...... who enjoy wine from Italy. I will have to try it out. Thanks again. Smile

It was released as an 'In-Store Discovery' on Sept 15, and therefore not shown in the release catalogue.

Beefy Barolo. Reviewed in 2001, Robert Parker gave this Barolo 90 points describing it as "highly-extracted" and "dense". With another 6 years under its belt, it is beginning to enter into maturity. Its powerful fruit character and firm tannins make it a great choice with, well, beef.

When Parker describes a wine as being "highly-extracted" and "dense", I get the willies. Sounds like his description for Aussie shiraz - and he only gives this one 90 points. Time to steer clear!

I have never written a TN before but I will try. Uncorking was a real challenge. The cork was crumbling, falling apart, making me worry that this bottle might not have been stored properly. Once I managed to get all of the cork out I poured a little into my glass. The colour was a light red/orange the nose was wonderful. A quick taste, nothing odd here, so into the decanter it went. Intitial impression was good. It was not full bodied yet there was the warm spice and fruitiness one expects in a good Barolo, however it was bit intense at first taste, and lacked balance. This needed a little air. 2 hours later....one would be able to taste a the fruity cherriness developing and with that... a nice spicy warmth, a longer finish that felt really fresh but the wine was still a little closed or something. It felt softer in the mouth still had a nice cherry, fuitiness with the same spiciness noted earlier, the finish was still very nice but longer...and with a nice subtle difference....a slight vanilla/banana like taste lingered. I noticed many similarities to other great Barolos but one difference. I couldn't really taste any oakiness. I am not sure why that is but I liked the difference enough that I purchased more, while it is still available, and added them to my collection. I guess the bad cork meant nothing at all, this time Smile

I was intrigued as well. I am no sommelier, please keep that in mind, and "banana" seems odd I am sure but it sure was persistent and quite enjoyable. I would love to try this Barolo with Prime Rib, medium rare. Smile

  • 1997 Alessandro Brero Barolo Poderi Roset - Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo (12/6/2008)
    5th Annual Truffle Dinner (Home, Toronto, Canada): Clear, medium-garnet colour. Aromas of currant, plum, cherry, meat, earth. Full-bodied, more jammy than the 1996, but still shows good acidity and balance. Black plums, vanilla, black cherry, black tea, and truffle notes on the palate. Moderate finish, ~30-35s, with black fruit and tea. I slightly preferred the 1996 version served alongside this wine with its red fruit and greater elegance. Drink over the next 3-5 years. (90 pts.)
