Popped and poured on Christmas Eve. Had with Grilled Steaks. Deep purple. Restrained nose of dark fruit, chocolate, and coffee. Very smooth, but short finish. Definately not 97 pts. I'm guessing that some air or bottle time will help.

2004 Mitolo G.A.M. Shiraz - McLaren Vale, Australia
Bottle decanted 6 hr’s before my first taste. Thick, violet nose. This has huge flavors of black and blue fruits with some raspberry and chocolate mixed in with just a touch of pepper picking up on the finish. Nice complexity with excellent depth and a plush, textured, mid-palate that expands further on the lengthy, heady finish. Fine to chalky tannins with some minerality and acidity, this can drink wonderfully now if given adequate decant time, but should do well for several years to come. My WOTN S97 from Napa off-line at Pyang’s. 2/3/2006

Decanted 3.5 hr’s. Consistent with previous notes. This has incredible mouthfeel. 2/11/2006

six hours decant, sounds like I should save mine one bottle for a year or two.

After work, eveyone needs a little WINEdown time.

Inky bluish/black in color. Decanted with an aerating funnel for 1 hour. Nose of dark berries... blackberries, but mostly blueberries. I get a slight hint of butter on the nose. Sweet vanilla and oak, with a hint of toast. Very stong tannins, as this was definitely the wrong choice for a prime, dry-aged filet mignon. I hoping this improves with more time in the bottle. Very nice, but no way a 97 pointer... at least not yet. 91-93 points. (92 pts.)

Decanted mine yesterday evening for 6 hours as well - and it opened up beautifully. I didn't see much differences between 2003 and 2004 so I stay with 95 pts. for the 2004.

A great buy for 38€ / 45$ !

I agree with GD's assesment of the 04 Mitolo. I found it quite complex, a great wine to sip and contemplate. Amazingly here in San Diego, it does not find buyers at $49.

Served this with hickory smoked prime rib roast. Inky black with violet rim. Opened, but not decanted, 45 minutes prior to consuming. Beautiful mouthfeel here. Very rich, almost creamy. Notes of blueberry and blackberry all supported by vanilla and spice. I just couldn't get over how smooth this was on the palate... almost like velvet. This is a big, in-your-face Aussie shiraz with beautiful dark fruits and a nice 30 second finish. Again, I don't see how this is 97 points... but it is still a beautiful wine. I don't see any reason to hold on any longer. The tannins are well integrated, and there is still loads of syrupy dark fruits to enjoy. 92-94 points. (93 pts.)

Actually, those are the '05s. Still a great value though.

Decanted 8 hours.

Inky black with dark purple rim. Potent floral nose with notes of blackberries, smoky meats and anise. Still a little bit of alcohol on the nose but not unpleasant. Huge, viscous mouthfeel without feeling too heavy. Plum, mint and licorice with a peppery aftertaste. Quite tannic, but again, not unpleasant. This wine will age very well. Great balance on the long finish with some very interesting secondary characteristics. Good depth and a great value. Excellent, intriguing wine.

40+5+5+18+18+8=94

The only thing missing for me was that 'WOW' factor. Everything else is definitely in place

(Tasted June, 2007) Lots of notes above; my impressions were most similar to mwagner7700's, but I'll say that this seems like a classic wine in the Aussie fruit bomb category, so I'd give it ~95 points. I was really surprised with how smooth and generous it was. Luscious wine with a touch of complexity. Yah, I like that!

I purchased 4 750s and 4 halfs of the 2004 GAM. Huge fruit bombs and way to much OAK for me. Not even close to the 2003 GAM. I'm holding 8 of the 2003 GAM.
BUT!
After 3 three hours of air the 2004 had to go.

For the price, this is such an excellent Aussie Shiraz. But I have tasted a range on these with the worst still scoring a 93.

2004 Mitolo Shiraz G.A.M. - Australia, South Australia, Fleurieu, McLaren Vale (9/14/2008)
Dark fruit flavors, with more reductive fruit than expected, such as prune and plum notes. But a very smooth wine with a long finish. Enough acidity and tannins to keep it balanced, but not what I would call complex or elegant. A liitle too much fruit and not enough offsetting tannin or acid for me to get excited, but a nice example of the big Aussie style. (92 pts.)
