  • 1995 Dominique Laurent Volnay 1er Cru Caillerets - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru (8/18/2008)
What a great wine drinking so well right now. Plenty of mushrooms, spices (even Asian as Otis and Mrs French16 suggested). Med body, silky, integrated tannins, complex with a lot going on. Dark fruits and cherry with plenty of mushrooms, hint of coffee.
    Long and intense finish.
This note is from memory as I didn't take any notes a week ago. (93 pts.)

Sounds wonderful. I'm a fan of Laurent.

Did you think the wine was at peak?

Yes, I think this wine was at its peak and will hold at that level 4-5 more years. The structure, acidity and body make me believe so.
Talking about Laurent, Grossie brought the same night a '98 Nuits St Georges (Les St Georges) and this was at least 5 years from being ready (tannins were really up front and a little harsh right now).
Otis and Grossie can chime in!

I have a good stock of the 96 and 99 Les St Georges. A really great wine. Last bottle of 99 I opened I would have given 94 points. Kind of distressing when I saw the 03 on the shelf at 109.95 though. I remember the 96 being under $30 and the 99 under $40.

Paul, how was the '96 when you had it? I think '95 and '96 are pretty similar vintages but the few '96 I had were still a little closed. I know w+a had a terrific '96 Laurent recently as well.

been a couple years, I thought the 99 was better, the 96 still had a hard edge and I wasn't going to try one again for a few years. I picked up some 96 Perrot Minot Chambolle Musigny at auction that's been satisfying my 1996 Burgundy cravings this summer.
