I think that they are fairly close in terms of quality, with a nod going to Caymus. However, when you factor in price, it does make for a bit of a conundrum....

I would agree with g-man.

For me Beringer is the better wine, and the better value. You can usually find the '01 or '02 Beringer PR at $69-89 on sale. That's two bottles of Beringer for one of the SS. No brainer for me.

I just bought a case of the 2001 Beringer Private Reserve yesterday, while I passed on the 2005 Caymus Special Selection.---WA rated the 2001 Beringer Private Reserve 96 points. Still, I had to pay $113 including tax, which is more than DRAB's $69/$89, but much less than the $170 for the 2005 Caymus SS.

Chateau Montelena & Beringer Private Reserve will be replacing my Phelps Insignia & Caymus Special Selection in my cellar!

I recently picked up a couple bottles ( 02, 04 ) for $70. The 2001 is tough to find for less than $100. It is almost surprising the Beringer Private Reserve does not generate more attention. For the price and the ratings, it is incredible. It probably is label snobbery.

Is the production level huge?

Stick2,

They make a lot of wine at Beringer & and I think sometimes the Private Reserve gets overlooked!

BTW, That $70 was an outstanding price for the 2002 Private Reserve!

Anybody compared the 2002 Beringer Private Reserve with the normal Napa bottling? Haven't tasted the PR, but I loaded up on the Napa. My favorite sub $40 cab (paid $28).

Thx,

Beringer PR goes for about $110 here; Caymus SS about $125.

I had the 02 last year and it was a MONSTER! We decanted for 90 minutes and it didn't even come close to opening up; absolutely over-powered our grilled steaks. It has a long life ahead of it.

For some odd reason around here they have the '04 PR for $150 but the '97 for $100. I've had two of the '97, one was very good and one was excellent.
