JW1, that's a long time to let them breathe. Your restraint is truly remarkable. Why don't you go ahead and take a sip? [Big Grin]

OK Jonesy, now you can dip that toe or should I say tongue in...

...the water glass next to the ones that smell like wine.

Must say, none of those would appeal to me either.

It took me a while to understand what this was all about until I read the earlier thread. Please, Jones, the real notes for the Beaux Freres Pinot? I've always wondered about this wine, given the Parker connection. Would you be able to compare it to, say, Dom. Drouhin (reg. or Laurene)?

I consider the wine to be of substantially higher quality than Drouhin Laurene (a wine that usually fails to live up to my high expectations). The wine is young right now but full of flavor. It presents more as a big Syrah than Pinot. Some evidence of its upbringing in Francois Freres oak. Licorice, spice, red and black fruits. Just beginning to develop some suppleness. The wine needs at least five more years aging. Reminds me of a Pommard Rugiens or Les Epenots. 93 points.

Can we also have the notes on the Rudd? And terms like "Oreo Cookie Dough" and "leather" don't upset me. Well....actually, they would if you were describing a 1999 Chardonnay.

Maybe the member who suggested that the solution to my "kumqhat problem" was right....I need to get out more! Please can I stay in the forum?!! I fear I have made more enemies than LCC! Where is the white flag waving graemlin when you need him?! [Frown]

Pommard-style? Quite a compliment, Jones. I'll be in Portland in two weeks, and will make a point of looking hard for a few bottles of this (or the '99 if that's what's now available).

Thank you very much for the reply.

merris -- I'm not speaking for Jones as I "know" him only in the internet-virtual sense, but I'm not so sure you touched a nerve or offended Jones very much. He just provided some excellent and fitting satire in response to the comments from his last posting. If he were angered or insulted, I'm pretty sure his response would have been different.

I see that Seaquam is very proud of him, and deservedly so. [Smile]

Jones, I alays read your tasting notes because I usually learn something from them. I missed the "merris thing", but I have to admit that your tasting notes on the chardonnay's resemble mine, except I usually add "but doesn't taste like wine".

GATC: Check out the Tasting Note Esoterica thread in Wine Conversations.

Beaux Freres is currently for sale at the Wine House in San Francisco.

The Rudd was a very young Chardonnay and seemed to me in need of another year or two in bottle - the wine is tight at present. Some oak but not much. A slightly soapy nose (I get this from time to time in tightly wound Chards - I cleaned the glass just to make sure it wasn't lousy dishwashing by the restaurant) with wax and lemon dominating. Nicely balanced with acid and alcohol held well in check. A clean attack on the palate but not much length. I found it to be a decent but unremarkable Chardonnay. 84 points.

Thanks. I had the '98 several months ago, and thought this too was unremarkable. Upfront lemon and a slight nose of moth balls. I chalked this up to a so-so vintage, and sprung for a mixed case of '99 Chards (4 RR, 4 Carneros and 4 Bacigalupis). I haven't opened any yet, because I suspect they need a year or two in the bottle.

If there isn't a marked improvement, I'll be saving my money for the upcoming Estate Cab.

Jimmy V, I posted some notes on the Rudd Carneros about a week ago FYI. Also, somewhat of a letdown.

I was searching for Beaux Freres notes, and found this.

I have a bottle of 2000 but haven't tried it yet. I'm betting it will smell like wine! Big Grin

This is an absurd statement.

Just because the vineyard is planted with Pommard clone, does not mean the wine will actually taste like a Pommard. The second part of it is even less logical and appears to be geared towards those with little Burgundy knowledge, since these two vineyards have very little in common.

p.s. Pommards don't taste like Syrah either.

When responding to TNs like this the way to flame is like this:

"I've had Beaux Freres - it's not that dark"

This is not an attempt to flame anyone. Just a fresh comment from a casual observer on the king's outfit.
