2000 Gary Farrell Zinfandel Maple Vineyards - USA, California, Sonoma County, Dry Creek Valley (9/8/2005) Interesting wine, because it didn't taste like I expected a zin to taste. I believe this wine has is blended with a number of other grape varietals than just regular old zinfandel. My initial impression that this wasn't much of a zin. It actually was much less 'fruit-juicy' and raisiny than a regular zin, and much more complex, oaky and tannic than I've come to expect. If I had tasted this blind, I would have sworn that this was not a zin, but rather a wine from a place like the Languedoc.
Decanted for an hour. Magenta color. Somewhat spicy/peppery nose with a definite flash of alcohol. Blackberries, red plums, white pepper, oak, and more alcohol on the palate. Rather acidic finish. Cab like tannins give the wine some chewy length - 30 second finish. (88 pts.)
festiva, you should try the Pezi King zin maple vineyards 2000 the grapes are from the same vineyard. farrell gets first pick on the vinyard , i forgot who gets second then pezi gets the last! have tasted all three and the peziking won hands down! it you can get it give it a try!
