2003 Domaine du Vieux Télégraphe Châteauneuf-du-Pape La Crau - France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape (3/11/2006)
WIML91-92,PURPLE91,NOWA,WS93

Tasted March 11, 2006 by itself at a retail wine tasting. Opened and served immediately in a Riedel “restaurant series” Syrah glass. Dark garnet color in the glass, clear hue throughout. Nose of fresh cut wildflowers, black cherries and anise. Flavors of licorice, black cherry, raspberry and a touch of earth on the finish. Very nice wine for the money. I didn’t buy any but likely will later. Hold for at least 5 years. Recommended. (92 pts.)

My guess would be 10-15 years. I'd love to hear James Molesworth's opinion on when to drink this.

Just one more sip.

I'd say it would last at least 10-15 years. In the meantime I'm saying you better not bother wasting one for at least 5 years. Wink

I just picked up two at Costco for $39. I guess I ought to go buy a couple more!

My official review recommended now through 2020, though there may be a closed period in there somewhere.

I have tasted this wine twice on this trip by the way, and it is singing right now, so I can understand if it's hard to lay off. But worth cellaring for sure.

Definitely more closed now than when I lasted tasted it in 2006. I guess I was not sure where 2003s(a hot vintage) are going so just checking in from time to time.

  • 2003 Domaine du Vieux Télégraphe Châteauneuf-du-Pape La Crau - France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape (10/30/2009)
Young but really nice drab. Raspberry, prunes, strawberries(cooked) on a palate lush with more raspberry and some blackberry tastes. Smooth, high in glycerin but rather low in acidity given the vintage. Long satisfying finish. A bit closed. (92 pts.)
  • 2003 Domaine du Vieux Télégraphe Châteauneuf-du-Pape La Crau - France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape (11/7/2006)
Wow. What a surprise this was. A nose of licorice, cassis leather, earth and after some time in the glass, "band-aids" . Flavours of cherry liqueur and raspberries intermixed with more licorice on a very tannic and long long finish. 94 points (94 pts.)

Agreed - most of the top 2003s (and it is an inconsistent vintage due to the extreme heat and drought of the growing season) have shut down now. Which is ultimately a good thing, as it shows they have the structure to support their exotic, ripe fruit profiles...

I have two magnums I will be holding off of for the long run. I paid $90 per bottle a couple years ago.
