2001 Georg Breuer Rüdesheimer Berg Schloßberg Riesling QbA - Germany, Rheingau (8/21/2007)

One of Breuer's Grand Cru sites. The Schlossberg vineyard is probably the top site in Rudesheim and produces fragrant wines. The soil is rich with slate and quarz. This wine normally sells for $65+. I found it for $6. This was served with a Caesars salad. Probably my favorite wine on the dinner. This was dripping with minerals. Laser sharp acidity. expertly balanced. This was a dry wine with crisp citrus notes. Long finish. 94 points.

His QbA normally sells for $65?

Who do you have to probe around here to get a chardonnay?

This is not his introductory wine. This is labelled as a QbA to give the winemaker more latitude in how he vinifies the wine. Similar to labelling a wine that might qualify as a Chianti into the lower designation of IGT.

This is one of his top single vineyard wines from a grand cru site.

Breuer pulls the same QbA trick on his other dry bottling from the "grands crus" as well; Nonnenberg, Berg Rottland and Berg Roseneck. Beautiful, beautiful wines.

VM, I'm glad the 2001 showed so well. Laser sharp acidity and extra minerals with the citrus sounds like textbook Breuer. I'm having a really hard time keeping my fingers off my 2005 cru bottles. We got a grand total of 20 cases of the Schlossberg to Sweden and I could only score two bottles...

Did you really mean six bucks, by the way? That would be absolutely outrageous.

Yes it was $6! I bought the last 5 bottles the store had. I also bought the last 4 bottles of the 1999 Georg Breuer Rauenthaler Nonnenberg Riesling QBA (Monopol) for $5 each and 5 2003 Dönnhoff Oberhäuser Leistenberg Riesling Kabinett for $5. I could go on but I won't.

Unbelievable. Sounds like some poor soul giving away all earthly posessions before jumping off the Bay bridge. Or Slash-A-Zero Day.

The Nonnenberg is a delightful wine too, often with a little more upfront charm than the other, and great complexity. Have you dug into the 1999 yet (I saw your dialogue with ArieS a while back)?

You really should VM Smile

Thanks for the notes on the '01 VM.
I'm glad it's finally opened for business.
I wasted one a few years ago.

Really similar in profile to the 2000 I had last month but the 2001 is just a bigger, better wine overall.
Citrus on the nose, with minerals, spices. On the palate layers and layers of apples, spices and minerals. The finish is extremely long, wow.

Sounds like you had a similar experience as I did when I tried this wine.

2001 Georg Breuer Rüdesheimer Berg Schloßberg Riesling - Germany, Rheingau (11/9/2008)

Took a bottle of this to Anwar and Trigirl's house this weekend. Paired it with Thai food. Drinking very well as Aries stated. Identical notes as the first time I had this. Excellent wine. 93-94 points.

I'd say that's pretty good QPR. Razz
