I am just starting to get into French wines and found 1 bottle of this last night for $69. All I know about it is that it is a Chateau Haut-Brion 2nd. Any TNs or help with this is appreciated!

Not at that price - $35 maybe. Second wines are rarely good deals, although Bahans is one, along with Les Forts de Latour, Clos du Marquis (LLC's 2nd), Carraudes de Lafite, and Reserve de Comtesse (Pichon Lalande). I also have a couple of Margaux seconds.

For $25-$60 you should be able to get first wines of good repute like Pontet Canet, some Leoville Barton, Faugeres, Larmande, Barde Haut, Monbosquet, Branaire Ducru, and so on.

I think now is a good time to shop for Bordeaux in general as the stores try to make room for the 2000's. you should be able to cherry pick the 1994 -1999 vintages at reduced prices. 1995 was very good all around, 1996 for Left Bank, and 1998 for Right Bank. Others are spotty, and like Burgundy, knowing the chateau is important (though not as much).

"Abandon all hope ye who enter here."
