1992 Spottswoode CabernetCork on this was in great shape, and the bottle had a fair amount of sediment. I opened this about five hours before serving and then decanted it for about a half hour and poured it back in the bottle. Initially a nose of tobacco, smoke, cedar and currants. After about a half hour the tannins became drying but then the fruit really started to come forth to balance the tannins. The last half of the bottle was just a terrific example of Calif. Cab. Cassis, blackberries, plum and a bit of vanilla made for a rich cabernet with plenty of depth. This might be drinking at its peak, but should last a good long time. My wine of the year so far.
94 pts1994 Far Niente CabernetI've heard (read) all the bashing of Far Niente, but had never had one. After having this bottle I now know of what others speak. Not a bad wine, but not great and a terrible QPR. This bottle got the same treatment as the Spottswoode -- opened about five hours, etc. Initially a nose of dried cherries and a touch of vanilla. The wine started off a bit awkward and when it hit its stride it was not my cup of tea. Sweet and pruney, with some spices. Some people liked this better than I did, but the Spottswoode was the clear choice among everyone.
87 ptsThis is the first time I've had wines from either of these wineries. Thankfully I found the Far Niente at a pretty decent price relative to its regular price. Don't see myself buying any other vintages of this wine. However, I wouldn't hesitate to pick up other vintages of Spottswoode based upon this bottle.
“Appreciating old wine is like making love to a very old lady. It is possible. It can even be enjoyable. But it requires a bit of imagination.”
