I saw it earlier today for the modest price of $20.

I like most of the Barossa by them over the last few vintages.

Doc - Haven't tried the '00, but I certainly enjoyed the '98. At that price you might as well pick one up and try it. At least then we can get TNs from you [Big Grin]

My general rule of thumb is that any big Aussie red worth drinking is not to be touched until it's at least 3 years old, longer than that is better, notwithstanding JW1's viez that we wait too long, or needlessly, for Aussie reds to mature.

Just my opinion, I could be wrong....

I have always found the Peter Lehmann Barossa Shiraz to be very accessible young. Give it a try, Lehmann is usually very consistant.

I tried the '99 when I bought it a year ago and thought that it needed time to settle down. I tried it again a couple weeks ago and it is drinking nicely. The Lehmanns I have had (96 through 99) all seem to start drinking well at about the three year mark. For my buck this is one of the best value and most reliable wines out there.

Doc,

I am normally a fan of Lehmann Shiraz. In short pass on the 2000 it refelects very poor vintage conditions in the Barossa. Here is the TN I made last May.

"Peter Lehmann 1997 Mentor was a wine that I was looking forward to trying as I have enjoyed this label for ages. The nose showed some complexity with lashings of black chocolate, black and blue fruit, mint, eucalyptus, vanilla and some VA. The wine contains a fierce level of powdery drying tannins, balance acid and strong fruit however to my palate this full-bodied solid wine was slightly unbalanced by the tannins. Rated as Recommended with ** for value."

Cheers

Just opened this - and holy WOW !!

23$ - Canadian pesos - BCLB

Colour - black, deep ruby rim
Nose - Black currants, burnt rubber and tar.
Palate - BIG jammy, chewy, lush and juicy fruit. Solid tannins, firm but supportive acid, finish is long and heavy - it's a monster.
I liked it much - GREAT QPR !
I'd rate this as a potential 90, but I'd cellar it for 4-7 yrs.

Cheers,
Mishy

TORB -- how does a note on the '97 Mentor equate to a supporting condemnation of the '00 Barossa shiraz?

Did you inadvertantly post the wrong note, or are you saying all current Peter Lehmann shirazes are to be avoided? [Confused]

I have to support Mishy's opinion. The color and nose on the 2000 reminded me of the '98. It was a bit tight now, but I predict this will shine with time.

This is currently at local Costco's in the Wash DC area for $12.50. At that price, buy a bunch!

Ok...$12.50???? WOW!!!!

The best in Texas is $19.99.

At any rate, I'm going out today to pick some up.

Thanks all,

Doc

R-tist,

Oops, sorry copied the wrong TN. [Embarrassed] Looks like the 2000 shiraz is an exception to the rest of the "less than great 2000 Lehmann wines" that have been released (and I have tasted) to date. The tasting note should read

"Peter Lehmann 2000 Shiraz exhibits subtle sweet red berry fruit over equally subtle white pepper and earthy notes. The palate is a surprise showing sweet blackberry fruit going through to liquorice and an earthy taste from the powdery tannins. This is a very credible effort for the 2000 vintage and is rated as Recommended with *** for value."

Sorry for the confusion. [Frown]

cheers
Ric
