  • 1995 Col d'Orcia (Cinzano) Brunello di Montalcino Riserva - Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino (7/3/2009)
Still tight and young. Dark cherry with spices, earthy notes and leather. Medium body, fresh acidity with supple tannins, balanced, everything is there but this is just not ready yet.
Give it 6-8 years and this is going to rock ! (92 pts.)

Hey French,

Was this the Riserva or the Riserva Poggio al Vento? If it was the latter, I agree that it's really tasty stuff and am glad that I've got one bottle left. I'm trying to keep my hands off it for another couple years. Here are more notes on it.

The Riserva and Riserva Poggio al Vento gets confusing and I had to ask for clarification from Francesco Marone Cinzano (the owner) about it.

Fut,

Thanks for the link on your notes. This bottle was the Riserva, not the Poggio al Vento.

What is the difference between the 2?

The Riserva Poggio al Vento is a single-vineyard bottling while the Riserva was not.

Col d'Orcia decided to stop making Riserva after 1995 with the exception being 2000 and 2002.

Poggio al Vento then should generally be the only Riserva moving forward. The first vintage was 1982 followed by 1983, 1985, 1988, 1990, 1993,1995, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2001, 2004.

French, thanks for the notes. I hope you have some more to enjoy in a few years time!

Fut, I agree with you that its confusing. I've had some puzzling experiences with Col d'Orcia. Some being just outright dissapointing (the '01 normale) Until the 1985 Poggio al Vento we had at the Italian offline in may. What a wine!

I tasted the 1999 Poggio al Vento very briefly a couple years ago and it's all about the structure. Amazing, but bury it. The Poggio al Vento really is made for the long haul.

I hope the 2001 is better than the experience you and LB had at the Fortezza. I've got a few tucked away.

Anyway, after clarification from Francesco I've got everything straightened away (in my head, at least). Smile
