This is truly sangiovese at the top of the spectrum. The color of ruby and garnet were classic and bright. If you like tobacco and choclate flavors in your wine this is for you. There is no doubt a significant amount of tannin in this wine, but also a seamless red velvet blanket that surrounds your mouth. On the back side is aged plums and dark cheeries with a 30 second finish. I would rate this wine 95 pts.

Some general info:

Poggio All'Oro means "Hill of Gold". The grapes used to make this wine are from a hillside vineyard 820 feet above sea level. The soil is very rocky. This is aged in French oak barriques for 30 months.

Would I pay over $100 for this wine? No. I have not had the current release (1997). If I found this for $75 I would buy it.

The '93 Poggio All'Oro has been one of my favorite wines (still have 1 left) and your tasting notes would apply well to it as well (though the tannins were/are perhaps somewhat less). I picked up a '95 a year or two ago as well and am looking foreward to drinking it in a few...thanks for the tasting notes - I'm anticipating it all the more!

at a Banfi tasting in May 2002. It had a lot of character and plenty of power. I found it had too much tannin for my taste, but I recognize that this will be a beautiful wine in a few years. I have a bottle sitting in the cellar which I will look forward to opening in about 3-5 yrs. I equate it to a fine single malt scotch which bites the hell out of you, but you come back for more because it has such character and unique taste

Italian Wino - I found this for $75, so I bought it!

Other threads on this wine here and here.

This wine was really impressive and super enjoyable. I was very impressed... and a little surprised, b/c I've not usually enjoyed Banfi Brunelli as much as the scores. I don't have specific notes, but it had gorgeous flavor, was well-balanced, with no weaknesses. Drinking very well. 93-94 pts is probably about right.
