See related thread in Dining and Cooking... "A Perfect Match".
Had this with strips of ribeye with a Stilton and Green Peppercorn Sauce. This was one of WS's Top 100 Wines of last year...20something I think. Pretty, deep red in color. Aromas of mineral and pungent "barnyard" intermingled with ripe plums. The plum carries through on the palate as do the mineral and acrid qualities including wild mushrooms and loamy earth. Has significant quantities of fine tannins on the finish. This wine has very impressive complexity and I think easily warrants its high placement on last year's list. Just make sure you pair it with a dish that will stand up to it. The Stilton sauce brought out the best in this wine. Easily 93-94 points from me...especially at $10-12 per. This turned out to be a terrific buy, merris.
Last August I scored another case from 10 that had been delivered to Vancouver along with the 2000's, giving me 4 cases in total. We drink a bottle of this wine every week or two. I don't see the wine improving beyond its present state, so IMO it can only go downhill now. But it sure is balanced well, and is remarkably food-friendly. |

I've had this in a blind tasting side-by-side with the '00 a few months ago. One thing I liked about it was a dominant aroma reminiscent of a good, aged Gruyere cheese. I loved that smell. I remember rating it at about 88p but I had a hard time digging out the 94p that WS gave it. Still, better than the '00.
